Strong education about technology remains woefully behind. Here's a stark example: To graduate with a Letters, Arts, and Sciences degree from the UC system (or most colleges), you are required to takes courses in physical and life sciences. You are required to study language, society, history, culture, and the arts. But you are not required to study technology-- not a single course is required.

Generally speaking, when a media executive tells you they are going to "repurpose" content from one medium to the next, be skeptical. Very skeptical. This issue is on my mind as we refine our mobile strategy. On one hand, mobile is not an entirely new medium, as it leverages underlying internet infrastructure and content.

If you are interviewing with me, read this, it should help. These tips are based on my experience interviewing more than 3,500 people over more than two decades (an average of about 3 per week). As simple as these pointers seem, a majority of the people I interview struggle with some of them: Tip #1: Tell me about how you are going to create value for our shareholders.

Despite the worst advertising recession since at least WWII, both Google and Yahoo's search revenues increased 3-4% in the U.S in Q1 compared to a year ago. Once the economy truly bottoms, I expect search revenues to rebound nicely. Here's why: Search query volumes in the U.S.

One of the first things you notice about twitter is what a positive, happy place it is. In fact, Tweeters are 51% more likely to show love than the world at large. Facebookers show 10% more love than average. Oprah.com, on the other hand, shows 11% less.

Our "eureka!" moments are a literal burst of mental energy emerging from calm. Recent research shows that the two main steps in the problem solving process, analysis and insight, use completely different parts of the brain and rhythms of thought. Brain monitors show that epiphanies arise from relative quiet in the brain, followed by a flash of activity. I sometimes close my eyes for a brief moment when I need to think really hard.

Now that I work at MySpace I really need to better balance my SXSW time between interactive and music. While While I was flying out of Austin last Monday my MySpace Music colleagues were pouring in. While it’s great for us to have a “changing of the guards” that means I’m missing some great live music events. Sponsored

One of the topics that came up in my post Mobile Internet Apple Facebook was around open vs. closed platforms. This issue comes up at the start of almost every new startup company in a variety of forms. I’m constantly struggling with trying to figure out the best way to pull together solutions, especially with how fast things move.

A post by Fred Wilson pointed me to Dave McClure's Startup Metrics presentation. This is a great presentation and one that I'm going to point out to startup / early stage company CEOs. In many cases, I can break it down into: Customer Acquisition Cost – how will you reach prospects, how will you convert them and how

I generally am working as an acting CTO for about 3-4 start-ups or other companies at any one time. I was just talking with someone who asked me to define how that could work and what they meant. Great question. I also found this interesting graphic of the changing needs around the CTO role in different

For some reason over the past week, I've been asked by three different people I know about job opportunities that might fit them. Since, I've given them the same advice, I thought it was worth putting in my blog. I personally believe that the best way to hire, find partners, and find a job is through a network.

I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a software development company who had produced a mess. The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out. I always take a very different approach in early conversations. If I’m being asked to do startup software development, I’m going
