Funk initiated the study last fall to create an historical statistical analysis of the financial outcomes for the region's venture-backed information technology companies. Among the highest acquisition values were MySpace ($580M in 2005), Shopzilla ($560M in 2005), Rent.com ($430M in 2004), Lowermybills ($330M in 2005) and Sandpiper Networks ($630M in 1999). A new study of the financial outcomes for Southern California venture-backed companies in the IT sector finds that approximately $48 billion in value has been created by those companies over the period 1995-2009.

Irvine-based WebVisible announced today that it has acquired Pasadena-based Adapt Technologies, a developer of search engine marketing tools. Adapt Technologies was venture backed by Concept2company, Emergence Capital Partners, and Mohr, Davidow Ventures; the firm had raised $9.8M in 2005. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. WebVisible is a provider of local online advertising services, which helps small and midsize businesses place search engine marketing.

There’s no doubt (at least anecdotally) that the pace of VC investments in early-stage technology companies has picked up in the past few months. The style euphoria that swept the Valley beginning in 2005. Players such as Foursquare , Tapulous and Bump Technologies are attracting huge investor attention not to mention the huge hype around augmented reality applications such as Layar . Pasadena-based Materia , the advanced chemical technology firm spun out of Caltech, said Tuesday that it has licensed its metathesis technology to specialty chemical firm BASF. According to Materia, BASF will use the technology in research and development of certain specialty chemicals. Materia's olefin metathesis catalyst technology has a very wide range of uses in the chemistry industry, Financial terms of the license were not disclosed. Grubbs was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for the technology in 2005.

Aliso Viejo-based Smith Micro Software , reported Thursday that the firm has gained a new patent covering its compression technology. 7,502,514, "System and Method for Lossless Compression of Already Compressed Files" for technology used to compression JPEG files.
