The Orange County meeting is new for 2009, and while the following is true for the LA meeting the OC one is probably similar: You pay as you walk in, meet the organizers, get a name tag, fill a plate from the buffet, and then find a seat, family style, with the other approximately 100 networkers. Its success in New York quickly led to French Tuesdays being established in Miami in 2004, Los Angeles in 2006, San Francisco in 2007 and Paris in 2009. Sometime in 2007, it struck us that for this business to really prosper, it needed its own separate brand. This is the story of an idea that started out as a series of conversations on message boards and quickly became a marketplace that facilitated $5 million in design work.
What I’m most eager for you to see are the steps the founders took to ensure that their new business proved itself and earned money right from inception.

In March 2007, when Pownce launched, Twitter didn't have much of a head start. OAuth is pretty cool, I was involved with it back in 2007. We talked about more than Pownce and Twitter in this interview. Leah Culver is a developer who launched many projects. Pownce was just the highest profile of them.

According to Geni's Facebook page, the firm has been working on connecting the two services since November of 2007. Hollywood-based Geni , the venture-backed firm which has developed an online, Web 2.0-style genealogy and social networking web sites for families, has connected the company's service with the popular Facebook social networking web site. Geni said that users can now connect their Facebook account to Geni, allowing users to use Facebook's standard invite tools to invite relatives to join Geni's family tree serviecs.

In 2007, the business was sold to eBay for $310 million. Well, we sold the company in February of 2007. You know, I was as much -- that was all in February of 2007. In 2000, people had all kinds of assumptions about buying and selling tickets to events. They assumed it was illegal or that they'd get ripped off or that it was a small-time business run by guys who stood outside of stadiums.

I would argue that the shut-down of September 2009 was equally severe yet there are signs that this “VC Ice Age” has begun to thaw.
It helped me avoid chasing deals (and a house) in 2007/08 and it led to GRP’s fastest pace of investment in many years in the first three quarters of 2009 at a time when many others weren’t investing.
Bu when you start to worry that the world is ending (as it seemed it was in late 2008 / early 2009) When venture capitalists scale back investing activities it can be very swift and leave many companies that are in the process of fund raising hung out to dry.
