The study found that the greatest values for Southern California venture-backed firms were created by companies operating in Online Services (51%), followed by Communications and Networking (15%), Software (10%) and Semiconductors (9%). IPO successes (as measured by the market capitalization at the close of the first day of trading) include Entropic ($500M IPO in 2007), Divx ($625M IPO in 2006), eToys ($7.8BM IPO in 1999) and Xylan ($2.3B A new study of the financial outcomes for Southern California venture-backed companies in the IT sector finds that approximately $48 billion in value has been created by those companies over the period 1995-2009.

It's been awhile since we last caught up with Los Angeles-based Language Weaver (www.languageweaver.com), a venture-backed firm which develops language translation software, so we sat down the other day with Mark Tapling , the President and CEO of the firm, to hear more about where the company is nowadays--plus its strategy for growth and an exit. Mark Tapling: Since you last did an in depth interview with us in 2007, the company has doubled in size. My first career was in radio and TV -- two of the most un-trackable media there are.

Have you wondered which Web analytics products are most popular? I was, so the August survey on my main Web site asked marketers which Web analytics product they use.
Google Analytics was, of course, the most used product (69%) because it's hard to compete with "free."

In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up . I provided a whole set of questions that I go through with founders before Startup Software Development – Do Your Homework Before You Develop Anything . What existing systems will we leverage, what programming languages, software development methodologies, web application frameworks, revision control systems, etc.? What other kinds of systems will we likely need? I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies.

Santa Barbara-based 15desks , a developer of software-as-a-service for educators, said this morning that the firm has launched a new product for course management. The firm said it is privately funded, and first launched in 2007 at the University of Santa Barbara.

Los Angeles-based Language Weaver announced Monday that the firm has released a new version of its automated translation software. The firm said the new software includes an enhanced user interface, new support for Indonesian/English and Pashtu/English translation, and better support for document formats, including Office 2007 and Open Office. Pasadena-based Guidance Software joins the list of Southern California firms who had a good quarter, saying Tuesday that it had revenues of $25.2M in its fiscal fourth quarter, growth of over 22 percent versus its similar quarter in 2007. Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software, a developer of system management software, said today that it has reached an agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission into the firm's stock option practices. Quest has been under investigation by the SEC since January of 2007 over its stock options accounting practices. According to Quest, it has agreed to settle with the SEC, without admitting or denying the allegations in the SEC's compliant. Quest said that it will consent to the entry of a judgment enjoining future violations of certain provisions of the federal securities
