Funk initiated the study last fall to create an historical statistical analysis of the financial outcomes for the region's venture-backed information technology companies. IPO successes (as measured by the market capitalization at the close of the first day of trading) include Entropic ($500M IPO in 2007), Divx ($625M IPO in 2006), eToys ($7.8BM IPO in 1999) and Xylan ($2.3B A new study of the financial outcomes for Southern California venture-backed companies in the IT sector finds that approximately $48 billion in value has been created by those companies over the period 1995-2009.

The professor plotted data and showed us statistically that most people buy stocks when they are booming (e.g. GRP had a small dose of foresight (we were very bearish in 2007 – ask anyone who presented to us) and a smidgen of luck (we closed our new fund Dec 2007) that we did very few investments during the 05-08 bubble.  But imagine a VC that did 12 deals per year in 2006, 2007 & 2008.  When venture capitalists scale back investing activities it can be very swift and leave many companies that are in the process of fund raising hung out to dry.  Just ask anybody

Most of these predictions came true, but that is not remarkable considering that we were only looking a couple years ahead.
