commerce was relatively flat in 2008 and 2009, but if you look at the lifestyle category, the biggest growing area within lifestyle was sports and outdoors. However, one of the nice things about being focused on products, is monetization around the activity around products is very clear. Two of the unique values of our culture at the Rubicon Project are transparency and active communication. lot of people ask me about the things that we do to promote active communication and transparency, so I thought I' Communication takes effort, but we make it a priority. Transparency is a big commitment but it's also a discipline that, while difficult at times, is incredibly beneficial.

Ethan Bauley of M90 said that his agency encourages clients to give active members products. I didn’t get what I was looking for from this interview, but I think what I learned is even better.
I called up Kevin Fischer and Ed Weissman because they’re two of the top users of a site that was sending Mixergy a lot of traffic, and I wanted to learn how to get more.

If you want people to notice what you’re submitting to a social site, become an active user of the site, hire an active user or ask an active user to submit your article. (Though I asked Brent Csutoras to teach us how to grow our site’s traffic by using sites like Digg, Delicious and Reddit because he’s a marketing consultant who specializes social media.

San Diego-based The Active Network, which operates a network of sports- and other online registration services and marketing web sites, said today that it has acquired three companies which provide hunting and fishing licensing technology. According to The Active Network, it has acquire Automated Licensing Systems, Inc, the Central Trust Bank of Missouri's Conservation Licensing Division, and its subsidiary, Outdoor Central, Inc. As part of the announcement, CircleUp said it has linked with San Diego-based Active Network's eteamz division, which will deploy the new tool throughout its web sites. Financial impact of the Active Network deal was not disclosed. Newport Beach-based CircleUp, which provides Web 2.0-style group messaging services, said today that it has launched a new platform to help groups communicate with their members. The new platform--billed SmartMessage--helps groups send messages among members and others.

PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association released their Q3 2008 venture capital numbers over the weekend, finding that Southern California companies raised nearly $751 in funding during the quarter. The second most active industry was Medical Devices and Equipment, which saw $103.37M in investments. Southern California, which According to the MoneyTree Report, based on data from Thomson Reuters, Los Angeles companies led the region with $385.6M in deals, followed by Orange County with $186.9M, then San Diego with $178.4M
