San Diego-based Cymer, a developer of light sources used for semiconductor manufacturing, said late Thursday that the firm has laid off 100 people, or 10 percent of its personnel. Cymer announced the move in conjunction with reduced earnings estimates for Q4 2008. Midway Games, a Chicago-based video games developer, announced Tuesday afternoon that it has cut 25 percent of its staff, in a move that also affects the firm's San Diego locations. Number of San Diego employees affected by the move was not disclosed. The cuts in San Diego came in conjunction with closure of the firm's Austin operations and similar cuts in Chicag Midway made the announcement saying that the moves were necessary in response to both challenges the firm is facing, as well as the current economy.

San Diego-based Cymer, which develops lasers used in the manufacturing of semiconductors, said Friday that it has laid off 8 percent, or 85 employees, from the firm. The company said the move will save it around $8.4M in annual savings. The company blamed the moves on the severity of the slowdown in the economy and semiconductor industry.

Los Angeles- and San Diego-based Veoh (www.veoh.com), an online video sharing site, has laid off 20 people, or roughly 18-20 percent of the firm's employees. The layoffs occurred yesterday, when employees were notified of the move. The firm continues to have operations in Los Angeles and San Diego. A spokesperson for Veoh told socalTECH that the changes affected every group in the firm, and was because the firm wanted to make smart choices early on in the game given a possible internet advertising slowdown.

San Diego-based Vical Incorporated, a biopharmaceuticals firm focused on immunotherapeutics for cancer and DNA vaccines for infectious diseases, said Friday that it has cut 29 employees, or approximately 20 percent of the firm. According to the company, it has also accelerated closure of a research facility. The firm said that the moves are expected to reduce the firm's cash burn by approximately $4M annually.

San Diego-based NextWave Wireless said today that it is discontinuing the operations of the firm's GO Networks unit, which developed wide area Wi-Fi networking equipment. NextWave said it has submitted a request in Israel to seek bankruptcy protection for the unit's Tel Aviv subsidiary. NextWave said the move was part of its efforts to divest its network infrastructure subsidiaries.

San Diego-based wireless broadband technology firm NextWave Wireless said today that it has scored a new, $100M debt financing for the firm's business, and made cuts in its staff, along with hiring an investment banker. The company said the restructuring included a reduction in workforce by over 20 percent. The company also said it is looking to divest it infrastructure business units in the new term, and hired an investment banker to manage the sale.
