San Diego-based PowerGenix , a venture backed developer of Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) rechargeable batteries, announced Tuesday that the firm has sold a number of its batteries to the U.S. military vehicles--in 2008. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), as part of a potential use of the firm's in military vehicles. PowerGenix said that the TARDEC is looking to test the firm's batteries as a possible replacement for lead-acid "6T" batteries currently in use in the U.S.

San Diego-based Fallbrook Technologies , a developer of continuous variable transmissions aimed at the electric vehicle market, has filed for an IPO, saying Tuesday evening in a filing that it is looking to raise up to $50M in an offering. For 2008, the firm had a loss of $11.9M The IPO is being underwritten by CIBC and Mackie Research Capital. Fallbrook is venture backed by Robeco Group, NGEN Partners, and others.

Midway Games, a Chicago-based video games developer, announced Tuesday afternoon that it has cut 25 percent of its staff, in a move that also affects the firm's San Diego locations. Number of San Diego employees affected by the move was not disclosed. The cuts in San Diego came in conjunction with closure of the firm's Austin operations and similar cuts in Chicag Midway made the announcement saying that the moves were necessary in response to both challenges the firm is facing, as well as the current economy.
Venture capital firm Sofinnova Ventures has hired on an Executive-in-Residence based in San Diego, the firm said Thursday. According to Sofinnova, Ekman will work to identify and build early stage companies, and will be based in San Diego.
