El Segundo-based iRise, a maker of software for prototyping web applications and software, is targeting ecommerce retailers with a new set of templates, the firm said Wednesday. According to iRise, it has made pre-configured, business software visualization templates for the firm's products available to ecommerce retailers. iRise provides software which are used by product managers and The templates help online retailers work through visualization and testing of their sites, before actual coding of their web sites. Today, San Diego-based Metaplace (www.metaplace.com), which develops virtual world software, is announcing a funding round from Charles River Ventures, Crescendo Ventures, and high profile investors Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. We've had users using our software to create a "virtual dinner table"--where there is a husband deployed overseas in the military, and this allows them to have a virtual dinner with the family. We spoke with Raph Koster, the firm's CEO and founder, about the site and the new investment round. Metaplace was formerly known as Areae.

Today there is a lot of misunderstanding and confusion about what uses of GPL’d software might compel a company to open source their software. The FOSS ( Free and Open Source Software ) movement is made up of an array of activists that have slightly different ideals. According to the firm, it has hired on Daniel Paul as VP of Business Develompent, Michael Klein as VP of Sales, Chris Sniffen as National Sales Director, Steven Przybylowski as Director of Content Operations, Andrea Chu as Director of Content Distrbution, and Ron Lucero as Director of Software and Website Development. The new tracking system is in addition to RoyaltyShare's existing software for tracking digital music purchases and royalties. San Diego-based RoyaltyShare said this morning it will be developing a new system for tracking limited downloads and interactive streaming. According to RoyaltyShare, it will be rolling out a platform which tracks and automates the tracking of music subscriptions and streaming, based on the recent agreement by the music industry on revenue sharing for streamed music.

Pasadena-based Guidance Software, a developer of digital forensics software, announced Monday that the firm's products have been selected by Verizon. According to Guidance, Verizon will use its EnCase eDiscovery software on a pay-per-use basis. Guidance Software develops software used for electronic discovery and forensics, particularly for extracting data from desktops, laptops, servers, and other PCs.
