First, I’d like to quote (paraphrase) Brad Feld speaking at Twiistup in LA in 2009, “I keep hearing people in LA talking with a chip on their shoulders about building a tech business here relative to Silicon Valley. I LA was a leader in lead generation (LowerMyBills), comparison shopping (PriceGrabber, Shopzilla), social networking (MySpace … I know, I know – Facebook won – but it was still a big business). This morning, we published the results of an extensive study of the impact of venture capital companies on Southern California in terms of exit values, finding that exits from VC-backed firms between 1995 and 2009 generated an astounding $48 billion (billion with a capital B) in value.
MySpace, Shopzilla, Rent.com, Lowermybills, etc.) The study, which was conducted by Jon Funk of Ocean Road Partners (also of Allegis Capital), used data from our own venture capital database, additional data from Dow Jones/VentureSource, as well as private data collected by Redpoint Venturs’ Greg Martin.

I wouldn’t bet against MySpace . I know many of their founders and early employees, and one of the co-founders of Intermix (the parent company of MySpace) is an investor. MySpace has lost the battle as the “place for friends”. The following are my 7 Ways on How to Save MySpace
They attract over 70 million people a month (just in the US), and by most accounts are still one of the 10 most popular sites in the world. They also have a new management team, that’s headed up in part by Michael Jones (COO), the most all around talented internet executive I know.

Los Angeles-based social networking site is looking to court developers with the launch of a development contest, the MySpace Developer Challenge , the firm said recently. The site said the challenge will award $50,000 between winners submitting MySpace applications, which use the firm's Real-Time Stream API, Open Search API, Photo Upload API, or which integrate the service on the Apple iPhone. Andrew Thompson quit high school and built a web site that helped MySpace users decorate their pages. However in 2009 he has taken Mahalo to huge traffic numbers and even some revenue. Fox Interactive and Myspace move into their new office in Playa Vista, taking them further to the outskirts of LA and relevancy in the space.
Although sponsored bar events continued to decline in 2009 due to the economy, you all managed to get out on way too many school nights. One silly year end tradition tech blogs love to do is those damn prediction posts. As if writing a tech blog makes these guys some type of Nostradamus.

Los Angeles-based MySpace has released an upgrade to the firm's set of application programming interfaces, saying this morning that it has released an upgrade to MySpaceID, the firm's API for allowing other websites to access its information. According to MySpace, the upgrade includes new access to the activity stream of MySpace users, integration of OAuth and OpenID for authentication of users, and new developer resources to help developers create and manage applications. Among those resources are a new software development kit with libraries for connecting to MySpace via the PHP, Python, Ruby, .NET
