In this post, I want to look at just the question of when it makes sense to use Facebook Connect, Twitter Oauth, OpenID, Yahoo Browser-Based Authentication, Google Friend Connect or basically any of the other authentication mechanisms. Example What do I mean? Interestingly, they are not including Google Authentication . One of the topics that came up in my post Mobile Internet Apple Facebook was around open vs. closed platforms.

But I would argue that you don’t want to just default to those answers when there are a lot of other possibilities to consider. Beyond the fuzzy, high-level questions, there are often a lot of very specific questions like do we Use Facebook Connect – Twitter Oauth – Google Friend Connect for Authentication ? I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up .

TechCrunch says that Google just bought Aardvark for $50 million. Everyone wants to know where to eat, where to go on vacation… These are Google questions and Yelp questions! But for specific, tough-to-Google questions like my lint-brushing sign language, Aardvark is uniquely useful. Why Google bought What the hell is Aardvark (vark.com) ?
It’s like a Yahoo Questions that works.

And I’m not sure I buy some of their predictions just because of that question: We believe Facebook has the potential to serve as a communications platform / engine of one-to-one, one-to-some and one-to-many (and visa versa) for the mobile Internet. Facebook has made some moves recently that suggest that they may head more in the direction of Google Connect and be a platform, but their heritage and the way they view what the world looks like (think Facebook applications), suggest to me that they will continue to be a closed platform. The analysts at Morgan Stanley have produced a report that’s quite good reading on some of the major trends concerning mobile web.

The business Sean Percival launched wasn't meant to be the next Google. This is a story about how an entrepreneur can build an internet business on the side. He was just trying to make some money and improve his business skills.
Sean Sean built a site that sold customize European license plates, the kind of plates you might see on cars speeding on the Autobahn or cruising down the Champs-Elysées.
