This is part of my ongoing series Startup Advice . I Keeping a blog has been great because so many entrepreneurs have written me with questions about their companies and I’ve gotten to know many of you personally through the process. In In these many exchanges similar questions crop up.
Beware of VC Seagulls, who shit on you and then fly away (or worse yet leave you with Red Herrings)
I write this post as a warning to pick your VC’s carefully. I

UPDATE: I’m setting up a new project on analytics. One of the things I am passionate about is analytics and metrics. It was this experience that gave me the appreciation for the importance of metrics and the greater importance of making meaning of the data for decision making. While at one of my recent startups I developed a framework for startup growth metrics If you are interested in collaborating ping me on twitter @gammill. It promises to be fun and interesting.

TechCrunch ran my article yesterday as a guest post but I wanted to have a copy here for anybody who missed it and for future readers of this blog. This TechCrunch Europe ran an article in November of last year that European startups need to work as hard as those in Silicon Valley and I echoed the sentiment in my post about the need for entrepreneurs to be maniacal about their businesses if one wants to work in the hyper competitive tech world.
This is a slightly longer version and also has an update at the end.
Of course articles like these are going to inflame people because

One of the topics that came up in my post Mobile Internet Apple Facebook was around open vs. This issue comes up at the start of almost every new startup company in a variety of forms. Here’s the block that you see when you look at a blog enabled by Disqus (a third party commenting tool that can be embedded in blogs and other content): It allows you to authenticate yourself using Facebook Connect , Twitter Oauth (sign in with Twitter), OpenID , and closed platforms. I’m constantly struggling with trying to figure out the best way to

One of the things I am passionate about is analytics and metrics. It was this experience that gave me the appreciation for the importance of metrics and the greater importance of making meaning of the data for decision making. While at one of my recent startups I developed a framework for startup growth metrics (focused primarily on user metrics). I’m most interested in gathering a breadth and leveraging them to drive solid decision making. While at IBM I worked closely with a group of exceptionally talented researchers (marketing and technology)

I recently got together with Aaron Shechet and an early stage startup to discuss the direction the company might want to take. It was a great conversation and I thought it would be a good idea to do some visible networking with Aaron to get to know him better. Tell me a bit about your background. I grew up in Los Angeles and went to undergrad at UC Santa Barbara, graduating in 2003 with Honors in Economics. While at UC Santa Barbara, I then went to Pepperdine University School of Law and graduated in 2006 with a Certificate from the Geoffrey H.

Here are some recent great posts that I’ve come across that generally fall in the intersection of startups and CTOs. Enjoy. Startup Killer: the Cost of Customer Acquisition | For Entrepreneurs , February 2, 2010 Looks at the critical equation around customer acquisition cost vs. customer lifetime value similar to what I discussed in Startup Metrics but in more depth. Great stuff. Of course, one of the best ideas around this is to have Negative Customer Acquisition Costs .

I’ve been extremely busy lately so haven’t had a lot of time to blog (maybe when I retire). Its one of the key things in most all of my startup visions right now. I’m thinking a lot about metrics and visualizations. I’ve got a few great people already But here are a few things I’m thinking about. Let me know what you think about as it relates to these topics – I’m always looking for smart people to exchange ideas with and potentially collaborate with.
