Many commuters and executives who fly between Southern California and Silicon Valley were stymied by a massive shutdown of flights by Southwest Airlines Thursday afternoon, after high winds and heavy rain prompted the airline to cancel travel to and from Burbank, Ontario, Orange County, and San Diego airports. Southwest, in a notice posted to customers on its web site, said it would cancel flights to and from BUR and ONT between 1pm and 6pm, the majority of flights after 1pm at SNA, and the majority of flights the whole day to and from SAN. Note to SoCal startups: do not–I repeat–do not attempt launch your company on the same day as every other startup in the world, which appears to be today with both DEMOfall and TechCrunch 50. It’s awfully tough to whittle through the huge pile of companies to find those relevant to folks here in Southern California. Those I’ve seen so far DEMOfall has 72 companies launching, and TechCrunch50 has 52 (?). The biggest winner, so far — is DocStoc , which isn’t launching, but which is hosting the “official” PDF event guide

It's unclear if any of those employees involved in the deal would be located in Yahoo's Southern California locations, which include Burbank, San Diego, and Santa Monica. Further details on the deal between Yahoo and Microsoft have come out in a filing by Yahoo with the SEC, with Yahoo saying that Microsoft will hire at least 400 Yahoo employees, and potentially another 150 employees to help with the transition, as Microsoft takes over the search engine features of Yahoo's sites. Yahoo and Microsoft said last Wednesday that Yahoo will abandon its search engine development
