Los Angeles-based Equipois , which develops ergonomic arm technology, was the winner of a fast pitch competition hosted by the Monte Jade Science & Technology Association last week at Caltech. Equipois, which is headed by Eric Golden , has developed technology to make lifting and manipulating heavy loads and tooling effortless. The technology is based on the technology behind Hollywood's Steadicam.

She will be speaking at CalTech on March 2nd and is planning a tweetup around that time to get together with friends. Even though Sloane Berrent has moved out of Los Angeles and relocated to New Orleans, we still consider her one of us. Yesterday she was chosen out of 5 finalist candidates as the winner of the annual “ MySpace Citizen Journalist ” competition.

Carlsbad-based Helixis , a developer of nucleic acid analysis tools based on technology spun out of Caltech, has raised $5.3M Tags: helixis venture capital caltec out of a ongoing, $10.0M venture round. According to a regulatory filing, some of the funds involved in the deal include Advanced Technology Ventures VII and Domain Partners VII.

The spark for this post is that I'm going to go to Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum on Saturday. A while ago I posted about Secret for Networking at Events - Prenetworking where I recommended that people should look at who's attending the event prior to going to the event in order to make their networking more effective. I've received a lot of positive feedback on the post.
Pasadena-based Materia , the advanced chemical technology firm spun out of Caltech, said Tuesday that it has licensed its metathesis technology to specialty chemical firm BASF. Materia's olefin metathesis catalyst technology has a very wide range of uses in the chemistry industry, and is based on reserach from Professor Robert Grubbs at Caltech. According to Materia, BASF will use the technology in research and development of certain specialty chemicals.
The firm, which develops optical interconnects, is a Caltech spinoff. Last Saturday, I was a panelist at the CalTech - Social Networks event. It was a really good event with lots of interesting folks in attendance. I would guess that there was about 100 people - on a Saturday in Pasadena. That shows some interest in the topic.
