Earlier this month, Azusa-based CFX Battery , a stealthy battery technology spinout from Caltech, announced it had raised a new round of funding worth $14.2M. How did Contour Energy spin out of Caltech? Joe Joe Fisher: Back about three years ago, Caltech took some of the intellectual property involved with this to an event, where once a year they invite venture capital groups to come in. Azusa-based CFX Battery , the stealthy Caltech battery spinoff, said today that it has renamed itself Contour Energy , and emerged out of stealth mode. in funding from CMEA Capital, Harris & Harris, Schlumberger and US Venture Partners--said it is targeting the transportation, government and defense, medical, industrial, portable electronics and specialty application markets with its products, which were developed out of a collaboration between CalTech and CNRS, the French National Center for Scientific Research. Contour Energy said it is developing advancements in fluorine-based battery chemistries, nanomaterials science, and manufacturing processes, and is targeted at portable power products.

Carlsbad-based Helixis , a developer of nucleic acid analysis tools based on technology spun out of Caltech, has raised $5.3M Tags: helixis venture capital caltec out of a ongoing, $10.0M venture round. The spark for this post is that I'm going to go to Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum on Saturday. A while ago I posted about Secret for Networking at Events - Prenetworking where I recommended that people should look at who's attending the event prior to going to the event in order to make their networking more effective. I've received a lot of positive feedback on the post.
Pasadena-based Materia , the advanced chemical technology firm spun out of Caltech, said Tuesday that it has licensed its metathesis technology to specialty chemical firm BASF. Materia's olefin metathesis catalyst technology has a very wide range of uses in the chemistry industry, and is based on reserach from Professor Robert Grubbs at Caltech. According to Materia, BASF will use the technology in research and development of certain specialty chemicals.
The firm, which develops optical interconnects, is a Caltech spinoff. No details on the funding have been disclosed, however, the firm has previously raised three rounds of capital from August Capital, ITU Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Sevin Rosen Funds, and Zone Ventures.
Last Saturday, I was a panelist at the CalTech - Social Networks event. It was a really good event with lots of interesting folks in attendance. I would guess that there was about 100 people - on a Saturday in Pasadena. That shows some interest in the topic.
