Earlier this month, Azusa-based CFX Battery , a stealthy battery technology spinout from Caltech, announced it had raised a new round of funding worth $14.2M. How did Contour Energy spin out of Caltech? Joe Joe Fisher: Back about three years ago, Caltech took some of the intellectual property involved with this to an event, where once a year they invite venture capital groups to come in. This week, the firm announced that it was renaming itself Contour Energy (www.contourenergy.com)--and said it was ready to talk about what its battery technology is all about.

Asuza-based CFX Battery , a Caltech spinout developing battery systems, is announcing today that it has raised $14.2M The firm said the Series B round came from CMEA Capital, Harris & Harris, Schlumberger and US Venture Partners. Carlsbad-based Helixis , a developer of nucleic acid analysis tools based on technology spun out of Caltech, has raised $5.3M venture round. According to a regulatory filing, some of the funds involved in the deal include Advanced Technology Ventures VII and Domain Partners VII. Helixis out of a ongoing, $10.0M The firm has not provided any other details of the equity funding.
Carlsbad-based Luxtera appears to have raised $26.75M in another venture round, according to this week's PricewaterhouseCoopers/NVCA MoneyTree report. The firm, which develops optical interconnects, is a Caltech spinoff. No details on the funding have been disclosed, however, the firm has previously raised three rounds of capital from August Capital, ITU Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Sevin Rosen Funds, and Zone Ventures. The firm's products currently include a optoelectronic cable which allows for data transmission of up to 40 Gbps; the firm also recently inked a contract with Sun Microsystems and DARPA to develop chip-to-chip optical interconnects, using CMOS processes.
Pasadena-based FastSoft , a developer of Internet acceleration appliances based on research out of Caltech, has raised $950K in a debt funding, according to a regulatory filing by the firm. FastSoft has previously received funding from Miramar Venture Partners, Caltech, and angel investors.
