I attended the LAVA conference in my role as a Venture Partner at California Capital Partners. However, our primary reason for attending was to participate in the Capital Zone session. When the music stopped, we had to listen and watch the LAVA version of “Deal or No Deal” with all the noise and distraction of a game show. There were some interesting sessions including one on new media moderated by Tony Perkins, and a great luncheon speaker Gerry of Ben & Gerry fame.
Conceptually, lots of investors in one place and entrepreneurs on the other side

Entrepreneurs tell me that one of the biggest barriers of entry to funding is getting face time with venture capitalists; it looks like LAVA is looking to overcome the lack of time (on the side of venture capitalists) and the lack of connections (on the entrepreneur side) with this, and it might help increase the probability of deals closing here in the area. Tags: Events Venture Capita The Los Angeles Venture Association has launched a new entrepreneur and startup focused event next month, at their Meet the VC event, which will allow entrepreneurs to get to meet pretty much every one of the local (and some non-local) venture funds in a “speed dating” session.

I sat on two panels in the past week – once at LeadsCon (** see appendix if you’re interested in a back story here) and today at the America’s Growth Capital conference. It’s a big week for venture capital focused technology conferences, and Southern California startups — and we’re not done yet. Tomorrow is VentureNet in Costa Mesa, the Technology Council of Southern California’s annual venture pitching event, which promises to be an interesting local take on the venture capital conference.
VentureNet’s selection committee includes Southern California’s top VentureNet is put on by a local, volunteer organization which is less focused on technology celebrity, and more on getting worthy technology startups funded.
