Matt Coffin , the founder of Los Angeles-based LowerMyBills and an active angel investor in Southern California, has joined venture capital firm Split Rock Partners as a Venture Advisor, the venture firm said this week. Coffin also has invested as an angel in Billshrink, Buscape, CyberRain, Demand Media, Docstoc, Hautelook, Impact Radius, Inadco, Machinima, Mahalo, Rubicon Project, and 2tor.
...Tags: Split Rock, which is based in Minneapolis, said that Coffin will work with the firm to identify promising investment opportunities, as well as to help advise its existing portfolio companies.

The Open Angel Forum , the new angel investment group run by Mahalo's Jason Calacanis , is expanding into Colorado with a new event, the group said Friday. Santa Monica-based Mahalo, the search and news site run by Jason Calacanis, has cut 10 percent of the firm's staff, Calacanis said in a post on his blog Wednesday. Mahalo is venture backed by Burda Digital Ventures, CBS, News Corp., and Sequoia Capital, and provides human-edited search pages and news summaries. Calacanis said that the moves were due to a "challenging economic environment." According to Calacanis, the firm is "fairly certain" that advertising for the next two years will be "severely depressed."

Santa Monica-based Mahalo , the high profile "human-powered search engine" run by Jason Calacanis, rolled out a new, revamped site late Tuesday evening, offering to split advertising revenues with users who help to create pages on the site. Mahalo will allow users to claim and build pages for any topic on the site, supplementing the firm's use of employees and contractors to create pages. Mahalo has received funding from Sequoia Capital, Elon Musk, and News Corp., among others.
