San Diego-based cloud storage provider Nirvanix has added a new customer of the firm's storage service, Nasuni , a Massachusetts startup providing virtual file server software. Nirvanix is backed by Intel Capital, Valhalla Partners, Mission Ventures, Windward Ventures, and the European Founders Fund. Nasuni said it is using Nirvanix to provide its customers with unlimited cloud capacity. San Diego-based Awarepoint , a developer of wireless remote monitoring services for hospitals, announced today that it has raised $10M in a expansion capital round. Tags: awarepoint venture capital hospital wireless zigbee monitoring hardwar According to Awarepoint, the new round of funding was led by JAFCO Ventures, and also included prior investors Cardinal Partners and Venrock Associates. Awarepoint's systems are used to track equipment and people within hospitals.

Venture capital firm Sofinnova Ventures has hired on an Executive-in-Residence based in San Diego, the firm said Thursday. According to Sofinnova, Ekman will work to identify and build early stage companies, and will be based in San Diego. Sofinnova is an investor in a number of San Diego firms, including Cebix, Intellikine, Ocera Therapeutics, Phenomix, and Trius Therapeutic Sofinnova, which invests in early stage life sciences and IT firms, said it has appointed Lars Ekman, M.D., Ph.D.

David Titus , a venture capitalist at Windward Ventures , has joined the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation as Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives, the nonprofit said yesterday. The San Diego EDC is a nonprofit helping to bolster businesses in the San Diego region, and said that Titus will help support the group in familiarizing company executives in San Diego with the group's mission, encourage them to grow in the region, and also look to attract and identify companies looking to expand and create jobs. Titus is a co-founder and Managing Director at Windward Ventures, which he co-founded with Jim Cole.

SOMARK Innovations , a firm which is developing chipless, RFID tattoo technology used for animal identification, is setting up shop in San Diego, the firm disclosed earlier this month. The company--which also landed a venture capital round from Finistere Ventures and T2 Venture Capital--said the new location will be based at the Center for Emerging Technologies. Finestere SOMARK is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

San Diego-based American Internet Services, a Internet data center co-location provider, said Tuesday that the firm has been acquired by an investor group lead by private equity firm Seaport Capital. The company did not disclose terms of the acquisition, but said that other investors in the acquiring group were Viridian Investment Partners and DuPont Capital Management. According to AIS, the firm's day to day operations will continue to be run by its current senior management team. PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) released their quarterly MoneyTree data over the weekend, totaling up $751M in Southern California deals. San Diego slipped somewhat in the amount of capital invested during the quarter, to $178.4M. Interestingly enough, San Diego — which led Q2 investments — slipped significantly in deal amounts Taking a closer look at the numbers, LA led the region with $385.65M in deals, but Orange County also had a strong showing with $186M in deals.
