Los Angeles-based Crosscut Ventures (www.crosscutventures.com) is one of the newest venture capital funds in the area, and has quietly been working on funding local companies over the last year. The fund--started by Brian Garrett and Rick Smith --has been focused on digital media investments, and so far has made investments in six companies. We spent six plus years at a local firm, The fund is just celebrated its first year in business, so we thought we'd catch up with Brian to hear more about what the firm is investing in, the challenges of raising a venture fund in this market, plus his view on the Los Angeles venture market. Los Angeles-based Ace Metrix , which is venture backed by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures, said today that it has rolled out a number of enhancements to the firm's service for the advertising market. The service also helps companies compare the effectiveness of those ads versus ads from competitors and others. The firm, which provides testing of advertising creative, said it has launched Ace PreTest, which provides custom ad pre-testing for clients, Ace Macroscope, which breaks down ad analytics based on demographics, along with other updates like better graphing and filtering.

Griffith, the San Diego-based company noted, had previously served as its chief operating officer and chief technology officer. Prior to co-founding Syntricity in 1997, the company said, Griffith worked for Rockwell Corp., Syntricity is a privately held company. Syntricity Inc., a publisher of yield management software for the semiconductor industry, reported Wednesday that it has promoted Steven Griffith to president and chief executive officer.
Details on the funding have not yet been released by the company. According to the filing, Palomar Ventures--a prior investor in the firm--still holds two board seats, with Jim Gauer and Scott Walters sitting on the firm's board of directors.
