With your printed ticket, security at the entrance would let you past the rope and up the stairs you needed to wind your way back to the theater. Attire ranged from t-shirts and jeans to button-up shirts with coats, with a handful of some funkier attire. The Best from the Southern California Tech Central Community

My friend Mark Long recently asked me about networking in Los Angeles. Mark is a CTO, see, and his company, PortBlue , was recently acquired (congrats, Mark!). Rather than write something just for Mark, I thought I would let everybody else know what the good, tech-oriented networking events are in Los Angeles. will After transitioning to the new team, Mark was left to wonder, what now? Where do I need to go to meet the people that I will “build the next big thing for”?
Is there a difference between tech startups in Silicon Valley vs. Los Angeles? ve spent the last year running a tech company based in Santa Monica , CA and I’ve spent countless weeks in the Bay meeting with hundreds of tech founders. They build obsessively user focused products, do a fantastic job at virally driving a ton of traffic, but usually have their head up their ass when it comes to Most emphatically, Yes ! I’ve
Yesterday, I met with someone at the early stage of a startup. He was struggling to find high quality developers in Los Angeles. Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search He has a great concept with some complexity to it. Here were some of his particular issues: Most of the firms that come up are actually website design firms not website development firms.
started the series talking about what I consider the most important attribute of an entrepreneur :  Tenacity .  I If I’m up super late trying to crank out work I often get IM messages from Jason at 1am.  There was a recent TechCrunch UK article  by an anonymous VC (yes, I think posting anonymously is chicken shite) that talked about the work ethic of European tech companies versus those Silicon Valley .  This is part of my new series on  what makes an entrepreneur successful .  I originally posted it on VentureHacks , one of my favorite websites for entrepreneurs.
started the series talking about what I consider the most important attribute:  Tenacity .  I You’ve got to be able to come out of unsuccessful VC meetings, pull your socks up, and go into the next pitch.  You’ve got to hear all of the doubters, and the world is FILLED with doubters, and still not give up.  This is part of my new series on  what makes an entrepreneur successful .  I originally posted it on VentureHacks , one of my favorite websites for entrepreneurs.

RSS ); Why You Should Start a Company in... Los Angeles By: Laura Rich February 26, 2010
Welcome to Los Angeles, city of angels, demons and everything in-between. could see the LA tech scene was starting to get traction again, and I just had to get in the mix. Since then I’ve worked for three well funded start-ups and arguably some of the best CEOs in the community. For one of a million reasons you may find yourself here, perhaps you’re even trying to make something happen in the tech space. For those who are, I thought it might be helpful to share some of my own experiences.
Steve Gilison worked as a market researcher and product manager at a startup where my company, TechEmpower , did the software / web development. Of course, I immediately gave him the whole spiel on Visible Networking and Steve was totally game to make our networking visible. Remind me about your background Steve? I have about 11 years in the technology sector including roles doing market research, sales and product development. I also blog at http://gilison.wordpress.com/ and you can find me on twitter: @gilbola . What are you working on now?
Cliff Allen is someone I've known for quite a few years and he's a go to person for me when I'm thinking about issues around marketing, sales, technology, startups and networking. Of course, when I started thinking about Visible Networking , I immediately went to Cliff to check in to see how he's doing and to get his feedback, thoughts and ideas on the concept. Cliff, remind me about your background? My first career was spent building radio and television stations, then running the programming side of those businesses. In 1986 I started an advertising and public
