Seriously, when a bunch of Burners outdo you in the organization department? Nick Fairbairn of Engine Company One gave me this tip the day before I left, and I listened. The cool kids have been telling me about it for years, and this year I finally did it – I made it to Austin for SXSW Interactive. The panels were as informative as I’d heard, the parties were even crazier, and boy, what a good-looking and intelligent bunch attend – especially that Sean Percival! (Sean,

This is part of my ongoing posts on Startup Advice . We spent time out in the marketplace talking with customers, looking at their solutions, comparing ourselves with our competition and then squirreling ourselves away in our offices designing our next set of

I've helped organize the Los Angeles CTO Forum for almost 10 years. As part of doing that, I've had the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of different chief technical officers from different kinds of companies over those years. This is a private group of CTOs who are responsible for software development within their companies. They are generally the senior most person responsible for custom software development, database design, database administration, web development, etc. In a recent conversation with a fellow CTO, we lamented about the fact that while there's very active software development and web development going on in Southern California and West Los Angeles, yet there didn't seem to be as much of a community around it.
When he launched eteamz, Brian’s vision was for a comprehensive site that organized youth sports. Selling the company was incredibly stressful. The company went from spending $10,000 - $12,000 in the 9-12 months before it was funded, to spending $4 million over the following 6-8 months, because his investors wanted a fast and large return on their investment. I asked Brian Johnson to teach what he learned from launching 3 startups because he has both the experience of an entrepreneur and the introspection of a philosopher. Brian is the founder of eteamz (a web
So the key question is: How can I leverage my network? One Page Networking Tool One of the best things I've seen done by a person doing a search was to provide folks he knew with a one pager that roughly contained: Background - two sentences Job Sought - two sentences Company Characteristics - geography, size, industry, etc. Companies - a list of 25 companies that fit the bill. For some reason over the past week, I've been asked by three different people I know about job opportunities that might fit them. Since, I've given them the same advice, I thought it was

Organization visibility is a big goal of mine for next year. believe when things are going great companies tend to keep their employees less accountable. This is not a new concept and it certainly is not my idea. I Today, “we the people”, received notice that we are in an official recession.
Many organizations, including a couple that I'm involved in, do not publish the attendee list ahead of time. However, there's a Facebook group, a few presenter companies, that you can look through. Sure, I've read various articles on this stuff, but honestly, I still struggle with meeting interesting people.
