SpaceX is backed by the Founders Fund, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Elon Musk himself. Hawthorne-based Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), the commercial rocket firm headed by Elon Musk, announced today that it has inked an agreement with Space Systems/Loral to launch a satellite for the firm. SpaceX said that the deal calls for launch of a manufactured satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 as early as 2012.

Event guests were treated to a promotional music CD of Tim Draper's newly released song, "Take My Money", which is about the changing global economy, and the government's response to the economic downturn. Weekly updates! Please let me know if know of other items to add, or if you have any feedback on events. There's a promising new weekly morning networking event unlike any I've seen.

Cognition is venture backed by Draper Associates, Tim Draper, Fingerhut Ventures, and the Tech Coast Angels. Los Angles-based Cognition Technologies , the developer of semantic, natural language processing technology focused on the Internet search area, is reporting a win with Microsoft's Bing search engine today. The firm--which is headed by Scott Jarus--said it has licensed some of its proprietary semantic technologies to Microsoft Corp.

Cognition -- which is backed by Tim Draper, Draper Associates, Fingerhut Ventures, and the firm's CEO, Scott Jarus -- develops software which looks to understand English language search queries and web pages. Los Angeles-based Cognition Technologies, a provider of search engine technology, claimed Tuesday that it has created the "world's largest semantic map of the English language." The firm said that the information is being used as part of its technology for helping to improve search results and to personalize and filter content.

Venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson , of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, is the lead on a $60M venture capital round in Hawthorne-based SpaceX , the space rocket firm headed by Elon Musk, according to PE Week . SpaceX--which disclosed earlier this year via regulatory filing (and reported in socalTECH) that it had raised $15M out of $60M in a funding round--has Jurvetson listed as a member of its board. The firm is venture backed by Draper Fisher Jurvetson Growth Fund, Intel Capital, and Azure Capital Partners. Los Angeles-based PBX provider Fonality has scored a win in London, the firm said earlier this week. Fonality said that Top Gear Cars, which provides independent taxi service in the London-metro area, will use the firm's Fonality trixbox Pro business phone system.
