Los Angeles-based Mobile-XL , the international mobile information services firm backed by the Tech Coast Angels, said this week that it has linked a deal with Oberthur Technologies to include its XLBrowser Content Platform on Oberthur's line of SIM cards. The firms said that including Mobile-XL's software on its SIM cards will give Oberthur's customers access to new, sports, yellow pages, education, and other content. Strong education about technology remains woefully behind. You are required to study language, society, history, culture, and the arts. But you are not required to study technology-- not a single course is required. So each year a huge population of college students still graduate with barely a clue about the technology concepts and languages that will powerfully shape their work, their play, and their lives. Here's a stark example: To graduate with a Letters, Arts, and Sciences degree from the UC system (or most colleges), you are required to takes courses in physical and life sciences.

Irvine-based eGuardian , a provider of service aimed at protecting children on the web, has partnered with safety education firm i-SAFE, according to investor the Tech Coast Angels. eGuardian develops technology for verifying the age, gender, and location of children on web sites. SAFE is a nonprofit which educates consumers about Internet safety. i-SAFE As part of the deal, i-SAFE will offer eGuardian's products as part of its educational program for schools from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Thousand Oaks-based Xirrus , a developer of Wi-Fi networking devices which provide higher bandwidth and coverage than standard Wi-Fi access points, reported this week that it has deployed its Wi-Fi arrays at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. The win at the university is the latest in a long string of educational wins for Xirrus. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. The firm said it will provide coverage throughout the University's campus, covering 11 buildings and supporting 4,300 students.
