Studenmund is an advisor focused on startups, rapid growth, turnaround, and merger and acquisition, and was previously Chief Operating Officer at Overture. Studenmund also serves on the boards of Orbitz, eHarmony, Western Asset, and was on the baord of aQuantive before its acquisition by Microsoft. Los Angeles-based Passenger , which operates online communities for major brands, said today that it has named Jaynie Miller Studenmund to the firm's board of directors. On the flip side, as a person who regularly advises early stage start-ups, I often have a hard time finding interesting start-ups. Actually, the friction is even higher trying to find a partner for a start-up. eHarmony for start-up / advisor relationship Andrew Warner from Mixergy posted - Before Looking for Funding, Get an Advisor . He recommends that early stage companies get input from people who know the funding process, know the vertical, etc.

Because I was the Acting CTO for eHarmony at it's start, I quite often get introduced to people who have an idea for a startup company that is based on some kind of matching algorithm. They describe the company as the eHarmony of careers, clothes, jobs, college, tutoring services, doctors, service companies, investments, etc. In fact, you can get a good idea In eHarmony's case, it was the friction of finding a compatible marriage partner. Individuals use social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Plaxo as career-advancing tools, even more useful in a down economy.

Found this through Ben Kuo's blog: Media Matchmaker: autopsy of a failed startup from the Frank Peters show. We had talked to them when they were getting started. Sounds like its good we didn't end up working with them. Because of our work on eHarmony, we often find matching Good stuff! It's worth hearing Betsy and then hearing the investors take on execution (roughly 45 minute mark).

de Silva, who is a General Partner at Highland based out of its Menlo Park offices, pointed specifically to companies like LowerMyBills, eHarmony, and MySpace. He echoed the sentiment of DFJ Frontier's David Cremin, who said the industry here has grown quite a bit since he started 11 years ago. Cremin said that when he started, few people understood the rules of the "equity economy." Southern California's venture capital industry isn't just content and media, but is gaining a reputation for companies who "actually know how to make money,"--or so says Highland Capital's Richard de Silva.
