San Diego-based ecoATM , a developer of automated kiosks for recycling cell phones and other electronics, said this morning that it has raised a first institutional round of funding. The round came from TAO Venture Partners, the new venture firm run by Tom Clancy. Clancy was previously managing director at Enterprise Partners. Amount of funding was not disclosed. As part of the funding, ecoATM said that Jens Molbak, founder of Coinstar, has joined the company's board and also invested in the round.

San Diego led investment activity in Q3, with a large number of the biggest VC deals all located in the area. Intellikine in La Jolla and Zogenix in San Diego both raised $51M in deals; San Diego's NextWave Wireless raised $45.5M, San Dieg's Roka BioScience $37.2M, and Borrego Solar Systems, in El Cajon, raised $30M. Outside San Diego, Coda Automotive, the electric auto firm in Santa MOnica, raised $24.1M; Northridge based A quick analysis by socalTECH of our tracking of venture capital deals in Southern California finds that there was around $879M in venture funding activity here in Q3.

San Diego-based VMIX , a provider of software for managing online video, said this morning that the firm has signed on automotive brand Scion. VMIX is venture backed by JK&B Capital and ATA Ventures, Mission Ventures and Enterprise Partners. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. VMIX said that Scion will launch a new web site, www.ScionAV.com , using the firm's media management and delivery tools.

The firm is backed by JK&B Capital, ATA Ventures, Mission Ventures and Enterprise Partners.
