Tony: I personally am torn by choices around Networking Events in Los Angeles – you can go to something almost every night. I really enjoy events where there are interesting people with interesting conversations to be had. Still it’s something that More Visible Networking? this time with Vince Thompson. My friend Mark Long recently asked me about networking in Los Angeles. Rather than write something just for Mark, I thought I would let everybody else know what the good, tech-oriented networking events are in Los Angeles.
For the tech-oriented networker, there is one primary thing to keep in mind: Know the target audience for each event that you are interested in. Mark is a CTO, see, and his company, PortBlue , was recently acquired (congrats, Mark!). After transitioning to the new team, Mark was left to wonder, what now?

He was struggling to find high quality developers in Los Angeles. Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles web developer, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” His response was that he had done exactly that, but that the long list is not all that useful. Yesterday, I met with someone at the early stage of a startup. He has a great concept with some complexity

He is well known in the Southern California Technology scene for his work producing the Digital Family event series, along with the MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) series. What are you working on now? I've recently co-founded the first political social network FreedomSpeaks and CitySourced.com a real time mobile civic engagement tool. I've heard great things about their events. What's keeping you up at night? Closing our our round and dealing with all the inbound requests. You are a really great networker and help put on great networking events, what

Welcome to Los Angeles, city of angels, demons and everything in-between. I’ve had a rather in-depth look at the people and culture of the Los Angeles tech scene, both in person and virtually.
Los Angeles is a transient city, with most residents hailing from elsewhere. For one of a million reasons you may find yourself here, perhaps you’re even trying to make something happen in the tech space. For those who are, I thought it might be helpful to share some of my own experiences.

My time in New York was a good nine lives ago, but my adventures in both Los Angeles and San Francisco are fresh and ripe for dissecting. LA techies have to work harder to be taken seriously because Los Angeles is the entertainment mecca of the world, not the tech capital. However, while both crowds love to love the city of San Francisco, San Franciscans love to loathe Los Angeles, which is understandable in some regards. There is a saying about three different magnificent cities I have lived in twice. “If If you are smart, you move to San Francisco.

Maybe that would make sense as a marketing channel. What are you working on now? A few years ago, my CTO spotted a need that local groups and organizations have in handling RSVPs and registrations for meetings and events. After a considerable amount of market research, we created the SureToMeet system that’s now used by organizations around the country. I also write about holding events ( [link] ), and I’m writing a series about integrating marketing strategy with marketing tactics ( [link] ). I've been following both of your blogs for a while. Cliff Allen is someone I've known for quite a few years and he's a go to person for me when I'm thinking about issues around marketing, sales, technology, startups and networking. Of course, when I started thinking about Visible Networking , I immediately went to Cliff to check in to see how he's doing and to get his feedback, thoughts and ideas on the concept. Cliff, remind me about your background? My first career was spent building radio and television stations, then running the programming side of those businesses.

Advice for Steve? What networking events in Los Angeles or Southern California do you go to? What was the best one you’ve been to recently? Tony, it's great you'd ask since I've got a blog with a post about different networking events in the LA area . But I typically go to the Docstoc, Dealmaker LA, and Digital LA events. That surprises me because I either haven't been going to those or have been missing you there. It was great to hear from a long, lost colleague the other day. Steve Gilison worked as a market researcher and product manager

Los Angeles By: Laura Rich February 26, 2010 It used to be, if you were serious about starting a tech company, you went to Silicon Valley. But lets face it, when you think of Los Angeles, Internet startups are not the first things that spring to mind. Mark Suster, a partner at GRP Partners in Los Angeles, spoke with Fastcompany.com about RSS ); Why You Should Start a Company in...
