What existing systems will we leverage, what programming languages, software development methodologies, web application frameworks, revision control systems, etc.? What other kinds of systems will we likely need? I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up .

While at one of my recent startups I developed a framework for startup growth metrics (focused primarily on user metrics). It is a simple, but useful, framework for startups to leverage (framework subject to change). REGISTRATION - for many web properties this is pretty standardized. But it was not until the last couple years that I updated my skills and capabilities in web development. They have a custom implementation of CPanel, so it is really easy to add a domain, install and upgrade dozens of popular free and open source web apps like Wordpress or Drupal with just a couple of clicks with Fantastico. It includes the LAMP stack ( Linux OS , Apache web server , MySQL database , and PHP ) which any worthwhile web hosting is going to provide, I first started messing around with HTML in DreamWeaver and Claris Home Page around 1999 to put up my own music website.

For little while now I have been dabbling in the open source content management framework Drupal . Drupal promises ( in time) to allow practically anyone to be able to set up and mange complex social web sites with more features than a swiss army knife. Before you run off and start using Drupal be aware that although it is definitely suitable for many small to medium web sites, configuring and using it is significantly more difficult than WordPress and it does not yet Today a friend of mine Darius asked me for my thoughts on my recent participation in the DrupalCampLA BarCamp.
