Earlier this month, Azusa-based CFX Battery , a stealthy battery technology spinout from Caltech, announced it had raised a new round of funding worth $14.2M. Thankfully, because of Caltech and CRNS--the Center for National Research and Science, where the work was done, we have been able to take a look beyond lithium, where there are lots of players, where the chemistry was developed and led by the Japanese, and now the Koreans, and lots of startups in the U.S. This week, the firm announced that it was renaming itself Contour Energy (www.contourenergy.com)--and said it was ready to talk about what its battery technology is all about.

Search engine giant Google announced Tuesday that the firm is funding a number of University research projects, including a group of researchers at UC San Diego, a researcher at UC Santa Barbara, and a researcher in Los Angeles. as part of its Google Focused Research Awards, to help fund research in ares of study that are of key interest to the company. Monrovia-based Tanner Research has received a $1.2M contract from the Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), the firm said Friday afternoon, in additional funding as part of a research program. Tanner said the funding is part of the firm's development of technology to intercept rocket, artillery, and mortar threats for ARDEC. Monrovia-based Tanner Research , which provides technology research, electronic design automation (EDA) software, and other products and services, said Tuesday that it has been awarded a SBIR Phase I contract worth $100,000 from the Army Research Office. Tanner said that the funding will go towards developing zinc-oxide nano-wire based ultra-violet light detectors, which are being applied to military applications such as detection of missile plumes, bio/chemical agents, and explosives.
