According to AppleTree's web site, it is a publicly viewable, openly editable and global family tree, which allows friends and relatives to collaborate to help fill out their family tree. The firm would be the second, Web-based family tree site in Los Angeles, after Geni.com , the online family tree site headed by former PayPal founder David Sacks.

Los Angeles-based Geni , the online family tree and genealogy web site started by David Sacks, was hit by unexpected downtime Tuesday and today, the firm told its users Wednesday afternoon. According to Geni, it had "network difficulties" starting the morning of Tuesday, October 20th, with the firm taking the site down at 3:45PM to investigate. No reason for the downtime The company said it managed to get the service back online at 4:30am Wednesday. Instant messaging service Yammer--which recently moved to the Bay Area--reported its services came down due to "hardware issue

Hollywood-based Geni , the venture-backed firm which has developed an online, Web 2.0-style genealogy and social networking web sites for families, has connected the company's service with the popular Facebook social networking web site. Geni said that users can now connect their Facebook account to Geni, allowing users to use Facebook's standard invite tools to invite relatives to join Geni's family tree serviecs. The new Facebook connection also allows users to post their Geni activity to their Facebook newsfeed, the Facebook feature which posts status updates and information to other users.

Los Angeles-based Geni , the Web 2.0 online genealogy and family tree web site, has rolled out a number of updates today, including a bundling of its virtual gifts with its "Pro" subscription. According to Geni, all Geni Pro subscriptions now include unlimited virtual gifts, the firm's virtual items which can be sent to other members of the service. The gift items include special graphics and messages around birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and other events. Los Angeles-based genealogy and family networking site Geni has rolled out a new "Family Finder" feature, the firm said Friday, allowing users to import addresses from Microsoft Outlook, web email programs like Google's Gmail and Yahoo, or other sources. According to Geni, the new feature will look through your address book and select anyone that the company's software thinks is related to you. West Hollywood-based Geni said this week that the firm has improved the firm's site, which allows users to create family trees and network with family members. Geni's Web 2.0 Tags: geni genealogy family tree networking social web The firm said that it has enhanced the ability to find duplicate profiles in the service, with automatic advanced searches when users view a profile. The service said that the new capability will help its users see how many matches there are, whether or not those are connected or not connected to a users.
