West Hollywood-based Geni.com , the online family tree and genealogy site backed by the Founders Fund and Charles River Ventures, told its users today that it has created a new "Geni Lab" for experimental features from the firm. Geni said its Geni Labs effort will allow users to experiment with features that the company is working on, with no guarantee that they will be updated or supported. As part of the lab, the company said it has created a new feature to enable translation of pages on the site, tapping Google Translate for the translations. READ MORE>>

West Hollywood-based Yammer , the corporate microblogging site inspired by Twitter, is moving from the Los Angeles area to Silicon Valley, according to founder David Sacks. Sacks said that Geni, which spun out Yammer, remains in West Hollywood. The firm was spun out in September 2008 from Geni, and is backed by Charles River Ventures and the Founders Fund. According to Sacks, the entire firm--including its engineering team and executive staff--is moving to the Bay Area, to be closer to the startup scene in Silicon Valley. West Hollywood-based Geni said this week that the firm has improved the firm's site, which allows users to create family trees and network with family members. Geni's Web 2.0 Tags: geni genealogy family tree networking social web The firm said that it has enhanced the ability to find duplicate profiles in the service, with automatic advanced searches when users view a profile. The service said that the new capability will help its users see how many matches there are, whether or not those are connected or not connected to a users.

West Hollywood-based family tree site Geni has rolled out a slew of updates for the service, saying today that it has added features to help users collaborate with others, map out locations, and see recent photos. The new collaboration feature--only available to paid, "Pro" user on the service--makes it easier for different users to view and edit profiles in the system, and merge duplicate profiles.

West Hollywood-based Geni , the venture-backed, online family tree and networking site, said today that it has added a number of new features to its site, including the ability to search for similar profiles on the site, and improved access to popular features. According to Geni, the new features include the ability to look for profiles with similar names and birth and death dates, to help users find information on relatives that might have been entered by other users. In addition, the firm said it has created new tabs for accessing statistics and relatives on the site, among other navigational changes.

West Hollywood-based Geni, and instant messaging spinout Yammer have both raised $5M in funding from the firms' existing backers, Charles River Ventures and the Founders Fund, according to regulatory filings and reports. Geni is a high profile, family social networking and genealogy site headed by former Paypal co-founder David Sacks, and Yammer is the Twitter-like instant messaging spinout of Geni, focused on businesses.
