This morning's interview is with Mark Suster , a venture capitalist at GRP Partners (www.grpvc.com). GRP has just recently closed on a new $200M fund, and Mark has been one of the more active venture capitalists in the Los Angeles area in recent months. We caught up with Mark to hear about what kinds of investments GRP is looking at nowadays, his view on the software-as-a-service market, and how best to approach him with a pitch.
It Mark has also been quite active mentoring entrepreneurs,. It

My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly that is an “in-stream advertising” company currently focused on monetizing Twitter. Google’s AdSense) or some other form of ad. As John Battelle chronicles in his brilliant (and must read) book, The Search , Google thought this idea stunk. Advertising has driven the majority of Internet innovation
This has prompted many people to question whether advertising “in stream” and on Twitter is a good thing or a bad thing.

BCG, Bain, LEK – they’re all great), a few years at a start-up or a few years somewhere like Microsoft, Google, Amazon or Apple. But there are plenty of partners and successful entrepreneurs who don’t have MBAs. This is part of my ongoing series called “ Start-up Lessons .” 8221;

I myself recently covered the topic when I spoke about why GRP Partners invested in Ad.ly .
GRP Partners invested in GoTo.com which rebranded as Overture. At the time Google said it was against sponsored links because it confused the person searching for content – one of the main arguments people are again using about in-stream advertising. The topic of whether in-stream advertising has heated up. I just read well written pieces on the topic by Ross Kimbarovsky , Robert Scoble , Paul Carr and the NY Times .

My firm, GRP Partners, invested in the company that innovated this entire category – Overture (formerly known as GoTo.com). At But of course Google eventually became the massive winner in this category.
Google has made a lot of noise in this space and will apparently sell all of its display inventory this way, through the Double Click Ad Exchange . Yahoo! One of the investment themes I’ve been focused on in the past 3 years has been Performance-Based Marketing. When When I started investing the US advertising market was $300 billion with only 10% of

She asked if she could fly the next day to meet with me and my partners. I I didn’t understand why she wanted to do this if she already had lined up such A-list investors but it was in a segment where GRP Partners is very strong so I it sort of made sense to me. We My gut says that she came 70% as a spoiler for Company A and 30% because GRP has a great reputation in this space. I This is part of my series on what makes an entrepreneur successful . I originally posted it on VentureHacks , one of my favorite websites for entrepreneurs.
