Irvine-based startup YouMail has just gotten a new competitor: search engine giant Google, which launched a significantly comparable service to YouMail's voice mail services. The venture backed startup--which has scored funding from the Tech Coast Angels and VantagePoint Venture Partners--appears to have significant overlap to Google's new Google Voice services.
Google, YouMail offers a voice mail service which allows cell phone users to preview their voicemail messages in email or on the web, convert those voicemails to text, and provide personalized phone greetings to callers, depending on who is calling.

I'm happy to announce the launch of the Los Angeles Tech Content Community . The goal is to create a place where it's relatively easy to find current content and highly relevant content surrounding Los Angeles Technology. To be clear Los Angeles Tech is a jump off point. This is the beginning of a content community that collects and organizes the best content from blogs and web sites. The content comes from other places.

Sid Mohasseb, one of the Tech Coast Angels, just emailed out about a new “entrepreneur happy hour” the group is running in Orange County, which got me thinking about how entrepreneurs should (or shouldn’t) approach angel and venture investors. I’m sure there are many opinions out there, but based on my time working with angels and investors, here’s some of my random advice for would-be entrepreneurs going to the event (or similar ones):
1. Don’t start your conversation telling them the terms of your fundraising effort.

Larry Cheng, a VC at venture firm Fidelity Ventures, has updated his list of the top VC bloggers , ranked by number of Google Reader subscribers. SoCal doesn’t show up until position 85, with Sid Mohasseb of the Tech Coast Angels (133 subscribers), Marc Averitt of Okapi at 87 (128 subscribers), and Peter Lee at Baroda Ventures at 88 (128 subscribers). Mark Suster of GRP, the latest VC in town to start blogging, It’s interesting to note the huge chasm between the top bloggers (Guy Kawasaki and Fred Wilson) and everyone else, and the huge dropoff in readers as you go beyond position 10 on the list.

On the third Wednesday of every month I co-chair a meeting called the SoCal VCA (venture capital alliance), which represents participants from all of the top venture capital firms in Southern California as well as prominent members of the Tech Coast Angels (TCA). No doubt a tech M&A banker would have a bias to say that the world ahead looks rosy, but however you want to put a spin on the next 2 years I think you’ll find this data very interesting and useful. Matthew Graczyk is founder of angel-backed Zubican (www.zubican.com)--saw a problem, which was the difficulty of finding suppliers for products for businesses--and decided to solve the problem, with a site specifically targeted at helping B2B buyers and sellers connect. It's just a matter of time--when someone goes to Google and searches for a ball bearing, that search will be dominated by our content.
Why Matthew spoke to us to give us a better idea of what the company offers and why it was started.
What's What's the idea behind Zubican?
