I just completed an exercise where I went out to hire a new associate for my VC firm, GRP Partners. I took an advanced computer course in high school where I learned to build databases in Ashton Tate’s dBase III+ and to compile my designs using a product called Clipper.

You’ve got to see your product weaknesses and plug them. The first came from the CEO of iScraper telling me that they would not be able to complete the deal – their investor, Apax Partners, had decided not to proceed despite verbal assurances that they would. But then I got a call from my lead investor (coincidentally it was GRP Partners where I now am a partner) and they told me not to lose confidence. My firm, GRP Partners, invested in the company that innovated this entire category – Overture (formerly known as GoTo.com). At The configuration of the team was: 1 CEO, 1 Product Lead and a tech team of 6 people. Perfect. My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly that is an “in-stream advertising” company currently focused on monetizing Twitter. He’s product obsessed, visionary, inspirational and contagious to be around. All of them are really sharp on product and market.
Advertising has driven the majority of Internet innovation
This has prompted many people to question whether advertising “in stream” and on Twitter is a good thing or a bad thing.

I get to do a deep dive on their business model, product roadmap and competitive positioning. For My job doesn’t involve the daily grind of customer complaints, product outages, business partner / channel problems, hiring / firing, etc. I I still like spending time with our teams – at GRP Partners we have a great team – but I don’t have large numbers of people to be responsible for. If One of the questions I’m most often asked is, “what’s it like being a VC?” 8221; I’ve been a VC for nearly 3 years now.
