The study, which was conducted by Jon Funk of Ocean Road Partners (also of Allegis Capital), used data from our own venture capital database, additional data from Dow Jones/VentureSource, as well as private data collected by Redpoint Venturs’ Greg Martin.
Southern California has been lucky in that it has developed a number of clusters where there are now self-sustaining groups of technology companies, helping to bolster the region’s employment and wealth.
This morning, we published the results of an extensive study of the impact of venture capital companies on Southern California in terms of exit values, finding that exits from VC-backed firms between 1995 and 2009 generated an astounding $48 billion (billion with a capital B) in value.

A New York-based online learning firm with links to the University of Southern California has scored a round of funding, and added Redpoint's Greg Martin to its board, the firm said this morning. 2tor said it raised $10M in a Series A financing from Redpoint Ventures, along with Novak Biddle Venture Partnres and City Light Capital, for its service, which helps universities create online degree programs. The firm currently only offers one online program, from the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education. That program, MAT@USC, ofers a Master of Arts

According to the firm, the funding was led by JAFCO Ventures, and also included Series A investor Redpoint Ventures. SocialVibe said it will use the additional funding to help aggressively grow its consumer and business partner relations, along with accelerating product development. Irvine-based WebVisible , which helps local businesses place online advertising, has scored $20M in a new funding round, according to a recent regulatory filing from the firm. The round was led by Adams Street Partners, and also included Sutter Hill Ventures and Redpoint Ventures. No details on the funding have been released by the company. WebVisible is headed by Kristen Mangers.

WebVisible helps businesses market their products online, and is venture backed by Sutter Hill Ventures and Redpoint Ventures. Irvine-based WebVisible , which provides online marketing for local businesses, said Tuesday that the firm has partnered with catalog retailer PC Mall. According to Webvisible, PC Mall will offer its web advertising programs through its online destination site for business services, MyBusinessMVP.

WebVisible is a provider of local online advertising services, which helps small and midsize businesses place search engine marketing. WebVisible is venture backed by Redpoint Ventures and Sutter Hill Ventures. Irvine-based WebVisible announced today that it has acquired Pasadena-based Adapt Technologies, a developer of search engine marketing tools. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The firm said that Mains will help artists find their way to the firm's platform. Topspin is developing software tools to help musicians market and distribute their music. The firm has received venture funding from Redpoint Ventures and The Foundry Group. Santa Monica-based Topspin Media , the developer of music and band marketing software headed by former Yahoo Music GM Ian Rogers, said over the weekend that it has added Andrew Mains as its new VP Artist Relations and Services. Mains was Head of New Media at Interscope Records.

Los Angeles-based SocialVibe , which develops charity-focused, brand web sites and social media applications, said this morning that it has launched a new effort to help charities raise money on Halloween. SocialVibe is backed by Redpoint Ventures and JAFCO Ventures. The firm said that it is launching a new program called Click 4 Good , geared towards Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter users, which allows them to visit a "virtual neighborhood" online. Users clicking on houses in that "virtual neighborhood" are asked to share information on Twitter or Facebook, in exchange for charities

Ryan as the firm's Chief Marketing Officer. Ryan joins the firm from Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies, where he was global content director, and a well known commenter on the search engine industry.

Irvine-based WebVisible said today that it has hired on a new Vice President of Sales, Bill Lupo, as the firm's industry, online advertising, continues to thrive.
