This question came up last week. I am hearing from my project management team a bit of distrust in the technical capacity of our web development team. I thought it might be helpful to capture these symptoms so that in the future I can point people to this. And, of course, if you have the Founder Developer Gap, then you might want to consider getting help. Signs of a High Performing Team Going at this I think we suffer because of the distance and culture but the project management team takes every late delivery or small bug as evidence that the development team may not be capable. My quick response was that this was likely some combination of: Weak development team Poor communication, especially around requirements and expectation setting Past failures (missed deadlines, bugs, downtime, etc.)

would spend a lot of time trying to build it out, get past the PowerPoint and mock up stage and really try to get it on the web and see what kind of serendipity hits you.
Which is: get the idea out on the web, see who finds it, keep iterating. And the money people lent those businesses on our web site went to my business partner’s personal bank account. Do you know people who too much time on the details of their ideas instead of just launching?

Just the kind of person I like to meet. :) But I was a bit surprised when he emphasized how hard it had been for them to find a web developer in Los Angeles. My flippant comment was, “If you do a Google search for Los Angeles web developer, you’ll find a LOT of people and firms.” His response was that he had done exactly that, but that the long list is not all that useful. Web design typically refers to Yesterday, I met with someone at the early stage of a startup. He has a great concept with some complexity to it.

But it was not until the last couple years that I updated my skills and capabilities in web development. They have a custom implementation of CPanel, so it is really easy to add a domain, install and upgrade dozens of popular free and open source web apps like Wordpress or Drupal with just a couple of clicks with Fantastico. It includes the LAMP stack ( Linux OS , Apache web server , MySQL database , and PHP ) which any worthwhile web hosting is going to provide, I first started messing around with HTML in DreamWeaver and Claris Home Page around 1999 to put up my own music website.

That was my first dependable source of revenue, and because I kept reinvesting it in the business, it helped my company take off.
Eventually, with the help of great people, I was able to fix the company, make it profitable, and sell it. Relaxing is still a challenge for me, but I’m engaged to a great woman who’s helping me learn how to do that.
Mixergy fan, Lisa Bruckner saw me interview other entrepreneurs here and asked, “Where’s YOUR interview Andrew?” She wanted to know how I bootstrapped that $30+ MM/year business and a few other things about me.
