Small wonder then, that there are so many states/counties/cities eager to attract high tech companies. Southern California has been lucky in that it has developed a number of clusters where there are now self-sustaining groups of technology companies, helping to bolster the region’s employment and wealth. This morning, we published the results of an extensive study of the impact of venture capital companies on Southern California in terms of exit values, finding that exits from VC-backed firms between 1995 and 2009 generated an astounding $48 billion (billion with a capital B) in value.

Judging from the hashtag twitter traffic and the heads-down phone-illuminated-faces I saw in the crowd there was a high social-media user ratio. While the majority of the people attending are job seekers, because of the speakers and high quality of the attendees, some are employed professionals. California's high-tech industry added more than 21,000 jobs last year, and is maintaining its place as the nation's industry leader. According to the AeA 2008 Cyberstate's report, California's technology workers earned an average wage of $101, 200 (112% above the state's average private-sector wage.) By the numbers, California has 940,700 high-tech workers, a high-tech payroll of $95.2 billion and 43, 400 high-tech enterprises. All these make it the top "cyberstate" in the country.
However, how much of a link do Israeli technology companies see with Southern California's technology industry? Israeli high tech executives heading to the Israel Conference in Los Angeles this Thursday told us that there was a strong link, in general, between Israeli high tech firms and California in general--usually as an entree into the North American market--but do not differentiate much between Southern or Northern California as a base for operations.
