Pasadena-based eSolar , the solar thermal power startup backed by Idealab and Google, has inked a new partnership today with Ferrostaal AG , a major power plant developer. According to the two firms, they are in a partnership to deploy solar power plants in Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and South America. Financial details of the deal were not released, however, the firms said that eSolar will provide its solar field and receiver technology, and Ferrostaal will provide power block and manage the construction and financing of those solar power plants.

Santa Monica-based Factual , the new data focused startup run by Gil Elbaz , the co-founder of Applied Semantics , which invented Google's AdSense technology, is announcing the investors in the firm this evening. Venture capital firm First Round Capital , the early stage venture fund whose Managing Directors include Idealab's Howard Morgan , said last night that it has created its own startup exchange fund, a fund which allows the founders of the firm's various startups to diversify their investments and share in the success of the company's portfolio. The fund is similar to Startup Exchange , a fund run by Michael Barton, which strives to do the same thing across venture firm lines. The fund allows founders of First Round Cpaital's portfolio firms to contribute some of their equity into a central pool, and share in any exit success of others who also participate in the fund.

EI Solutions, the solar integration startup backed by Pasadena-based Idealab, has scored a win in the City of Santa Barbara. EI Solutions is based in the Bay Area with sales offices in Pasadena, and is one of a number of energy related companies out of Idealab. Idealab's portfolio firms include Energy Innovations, focused on solar concentrators; eSolar, focused on utlity-scale solar thermal power; and Aptera Motors, a hybrid car startup. According to Tioga Energy, a renewable energy services provider, and EI Solutions, the two are building and funding a 384 kW DC solar electric system for Santa Barbara.
Pasadena-based Perfect Market, the Idealab startup which is looking to monetize dormant content from publishers, said this morning that the firm's CTO, Dr. Perfect Market is funded by Idealab, Trinity Venture, and Rustic Canyon Ventures. Jay Budzik, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, by the Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. Budzik is a graduate of the school, which is a residential college preparatory program.

Pasadena-based eSolar, the Google-backed thermal solar energy startup, is announcing today that it has hired on a new Vice President of Engineering, Craig Tyner, Ph.D. eSolar is backed by more than $140M in funding, from Google, Idealab, and Oak Investment Partners. According to eSolar, Tyner joins the firm from Sandia National Laboratories, where he spent more than 30 years. According to eSolar, Tyner's career has been spend advancing and deploying solar thermal technology.
Carlsbad-based Aptera, the electric car startup backed by Google and Idealab, is delaying delivery of the firm's vehicles to customers, according to a letter to customers. The firm said that it plans to build a "much slower rate" starting with a small test fleet. One of the continuing problems in the startup and venture market today is the issue of exit opportunities for companies, and in particular the problem of liquidity for founders.
