A quick analysis by socalTECH of our tracking of venture capital deals in Southern California finds that there was around $879M in venture funding activity here in Q3. The information--gleaned from funding announcements, regulatory filings, and other sources--are not far off from socalTECH's totals from last quarter, which totaled up around $932M in investment activity. The biggest are for San Diego led investment activity in Q3, with a large number of the biggest VC deals all located in the area. Intellikine in La Jolla and Zogenix in San Diego both raised $51M in deals;

Adam also had a stint at Mission Ventures, and ran worldwide sales for open source middleware at IBM. Jetty is used in everything from Eclipse programming environments to a number of commercial application servers out there, to open source projects like Hadoop, the highly sponsored project from Yahoo which showed the fasting sorting of terabyte of random information recently. see you were at Gluecode, and also were in the venture world at Mission Ventures--can One of the big, open source successes in both Southern California and the software world was Gluecode Software , which was based in Los Angeles and acquired by IBM in 2005.

A recent analysis by socalTECH, of our detailed tracking of venture capital investment activity in Southern California, finds that there was around $932M in funding raised in the area in Q2, a rise from roughly $700M in Q1. Surprisingly, the numbers--based on information gleaned from funding announcements, regulatory filings, and other sources--are approximately the same as numbers in Q2 of 2008, which total around $955M, according to our own data. PwC/NVCA officialy reported $950M invested in Q2 of 2008.

San Diego-based ID Analytics , a provider of software used for detecting identity fraud and risk, disclosed today that the firm has added a new family of products focused on tapping information not found in typical public records or credit bureaus. According to the firm, its new ID Network Attributes products use information such as names, addresses, dates of birth, reported identity fraud, and other information to detect possible identity theft. The information is used by financial institutions, banks, and others. ID Analytics is venture backed by Investor Growth

San Diego-based ID Analytics , a developer of identity and risk management software for the financial and other industries, said Monday that it has hired on Jim Pathman as the firm's new Chief Information Officer. Pathman joins the firm from Lehman Brothers, where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for the investment bank's Small Business Finance Division. According to the site, it has added the ability for users to automatically distribute questions and news articles to their online friends and followers, by providing login information to their social ntweorking accounts. SodaHead, which is venture backed by Mohr Davidow Ventures, Mission Ventures, and the Tech Coast Angels, as well as angel investor Ron Conway, recently swizzled the site into a "social news" site, where people can debate and discuss breaking news and topics. Los Angeles-based SodaHead.com , an online site focused on a combination of news discussion and questions and answers, announced today that the firm has connected the site to Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo.

A study of the venture capital deal flow in Southern California conducted by socalTECH shows that venture capital deals dropped for Q3, to around $720M in deals, in a market dominated by clean technology firms. The numbers, which were drawn from venture deals tracked and reported in socalTECH's proprietary venture capital database, found that there was $719.7M in venture capital deals in the third quarter, down dramatically from $1.2B invested in Q3 of 2007, and down slightly from venture numbers in Q2, when there was approximately $966M in venture deals.

The number of venture fundings and companies we cover on the public side (RSS feeds, news, etc.) is dwarfed by the number of non-announced venture funding, new companies, and other information you can mine from our database . (yes, Not to mention, he later morphed his publications into the Venture Reporter–also a venture capital database.
There’s a new craze on Facebook, where people are tagging their friends and posting “25 Random Things About Me”. The idea is to share random facts about yourself that other people might not know.
