Calabasas-based Ixia , a developer of network testing tools and software, is reporting this morning that it has implemented a "cost reduction initiative" and cut 80 positions from the firm, in what it said was primarily an elimination of duplicate resources from the company's October acquisition of Agilent's N2X product line. Tags: ixia layoff jobs employment test equipmen According to Ixia, the cuts will save it approximately $11M in annual costs. Ixia said the cuts should be complete by June 30th, and that it will take a charge of $3 to $4M for severance and other related costs.

Santa Barbara-based QAD , a maker of manufacturing resource planning software, said Thursday that it has cut its staff, as the firm was "significantly affected this quarter by the impact of the global economic downturn." Tags: jobs employment layoff manufacturing softwar The firm, which disclosed the cuts in its earnings release, said that the workforce reduction is expected to save the firm approximately $14M annually. Number of employees affected by the move, and timing of the cuts, was not disclosed.

Epicor, which develops enterprise resource planning, supply chain, and customer relationship management software, said it would take a incur $4M in restructuring charges during Q4. Irvine-based Epicor announced Thursday morning that it is cutting its workforce, as part of a cost reduction initiative at the firm. According to Epicor, it made unspecified cuts--expected to save it $16M to $20M annually--in its staff, as a reaction to the current economic environment.

Garcia said that with the economic downturn and layoffs, he suspects there's been a push towards more virtual workers. "Many Garcia reported that it added ten mid-market customers in December, including consulting firm IBI Group and human resources management firm Workday. Pasadena-based Central Desktop said today that it is among the local firms seeing great results from Q4, despite the economy. The firm said its Q4 was "a record quarter" for the firm, which provides software-as-a-service tools for helping business teams manage projects and work.

In today’s economy, startup CEOs have few resources at their disposal to create near-term successes and are at risk of seeing previously supportive teams unravel into clusters of disaffected individuals. Instead, most startup CEOs now have to focus on cost-cutting and layoffs to reach cash-flow breakeven and self-sustainability.
