Interesting question, since I'm not an "open" networker (LION = LinkedIn Open Networker). I've been on for only a couple years (since July 2007, Discover your LinkedIn Start Date… ) but kept good track of my contacts prior. See below on how to initially populate your LinkedIn Contacts. Where do you find Contacts? I was recently asked how I reached “500+” connections. I worked as a consultant for a number of years, so was always working with different colleagues and customers.

I'm a big fan of LinkedIn and think that there's incredible value in the site. When you add this to some of the other CRM type capabilities they are adding, it begins to make LinkedIn even more powerful. But I'm a bit surprised that they decided to use a folder metaphor as opposed to tags. And by convention you can make them hierarchical, but most often you don't. With something as messy as people, I'm really surprised that LinkedIn would have gone with a Folder system – and only And I'm happy that they now have the concept of Saved Profiles and that they provide the ability to organize your saved profiles.

Make it your top 25 where you think there will be opportunity. Work Your Network Once you have your one pager ready, I'd definitely use LinkedIn to see who I can already find. Again, LinkedIn has been good for me to remember who I should contact with these kinds of things. For some reason over the past week, I've been asked by three different people I know about job opportunities that might fit them. Since, I've given them the same advice, I thought it was worth putting in my blog.

I want to take you through a bit of what brought me here, because I think it will help explain what I mean by visible networking. Networking Events – Questionable Return on Your Time Last week I posted about Networking Events in Los Angeles and Southern California and received back some interesting comments, some of the best from a LinkedIn Group. I've not found any great groups either. There were some suggestions in the LinkedIn group, but nothing that made me think … wow, that would be great. To top this off, at the LA CTO Forum we had Mark Suster as the presenter.

have a right click option in my browser to search LinkedIn for anyone by name. I've never been able to walk into a large group of people and feel like I can "work the room." Sure, I've read various articles on this stuff, but honestly, I still struggle with meeting interesting people. I seem to be very adept at meeting financial planners, attorneys, accountants, etc. -
