My time in New York was a good nine lives ago, but my adventures in both Los Angeles and San Francisco are fresh and ripe for dissecting. LA techies have to work harder to be taken seriously because Los Angeles is the entertainment mecca of the world, not the tech capital. However, while both crowds love to love the city of San Francisco, San Franciscans love to loathe Los Angeles, which is understandable in some regards. There is a saying about three different magnificent cities I have lived in twice. “If If you are smart, you move to San Francisco.

A few weeks ago, Rahul Sonnad --a serial entrepreneur who is best known for founding and selling thePlatform to Comcast--alternately confused and dazzled attendees at Twiistup, the Los Angeles tech conference, with a fake-stilted-Indian-immigrant and ukulele-singing-and-dancing studded pitch for his firm, Geodelic (www.geodelic.com). Rahul Sonnad: We just released this week a version where you can see some of these customized experiences, and the next big thing is to let really just anybody go to the web and create their own location-based experiences. We caught Rahul in a more serious conversation, and spoke to him about his venture funded, location-based information startup and what it's up to, as well as got the story behind the firm's incubation at Clearstone Ventures.

My friend Mark Long recently asked me about networking in Los Angeles. Rather than write something just for Mark, I thought I would let everybody else know what the good, tech-oriented networking events are in Los Angeles.
Twiistup – Twiistup is kind of like LA’s answer to the TechCrunch50. Mark is a CTO, see, and his company, PortBlue , was recently acquired (congrats, Mark!). After transitioning to the new team, Mark was left to wonder, what now?

I'm happy to announce the launch of the Los Angeles Tech Content Community . This is the beginning of a content community that collects and organizes the best content from blogs and web sites. The goal is to create a place where it's relatively easy to find current content and highly relevant content surrounding Los Angeles Technology. To be clear Los Angeles Tech is a jump off point. The content comes from other places.

One of the worst keep secrets in Los Angeles tech is finally ready for public viewing. We have received notice that the much celebrated Twiistup brand is changing hands. Conference founder Mike Macadaan (disclosure: a colleague) started Twiistup and quickly turned it into THE Los Angeles tech event.
A few years ago I attended my first Twiistup, it was a very small and intimate event.

This past week has had an interesting confluence of events that's led me to conclude that I want to start doing a lot of visible networking among the tech / web crowd here in Los Angeles. I want to take you through a bit of what brought me here, because I think it will help explain what I mean by visible networking. Networking Events – Questionable Return on Your Time Last week I posted about Networking Events in Los Angeles and Southern California and received back some interesting comments, some of the best from a LinkedIn Group. Several of the comments there echoed what I've been feeling: Person 1: I have attended a plethora of networking groups and have also found it harder and harder to continue to be motivated to go. Person 2: Very discouraging (few if any happy with their networking efforts) but not unexpected.

Los Angeles-based ExpenseBay scored the top award--a Lego trophy--at last week's Twiistup startup showcase event, rising above 11 other startups looking to strut their stuff to investors, angel investors, entrepreneurs, and others at the Universal Hilton on Thursday and Friday. The firm--which was selected by a panel of judges--develops Web 2.0-style software which helps business travelers to automatically fill out and submit expense report forms. ExpenseBay was founded by Eric Sikola.
