And, you know, all of those crappy little posters that we see in frequent flier magazines on airplanes, you know, they’re right! But, I was in the office and I forget how Jason and I first met, but he came into the office and he was carrying Xeroxed copies of a magazine, a “zine,” that he was trying to produce that was sort of a knock off of something like Starlog, sort of a geeky science fiction thing, and when this kid—because he was a kid at the time—I guess I was a kid at the time, he walked in, honestly he reminded me of me, he had a relatively thick Brooklyn accent, you know it was

But while in the time that they hired me for the second time, there was an online magazine, music magazine called Planet Verge. It was like a young, underground magazine. Mahalo Daily, before they hired you, they went through a big…they put on a big to-do to hire the previous co-host. What I admire about Shira Lazar is that she's too much of a go-getter to wait for the perfect TV gig to come to her. I've watched her build her reputation and fan-base using new media tools like Qik, Wordpress and Twitter.

Jason Calacanis , founder of Mahalo , has built over a dozen brands. When I ran Silicon Alley Reporter magazine, I had an expression, “You have to live the brand.” The brands I launched–Engadget, Autoblog, Joystiq, Silicon Alley Reporter, Digital Coast Reporter, Mahalo, TechCrunch50–all have memorable names.
