The day will include scheduled speakers, ad hoc presentations and breakout sessions on all aspects of building your career. The second event late February '10 was "Going Goo Goo over Google Analytics" and was held at Mahalo's office in Santa Monica. The events generally begin with check-in and name tags, general networking, the panel/presentations, then more networking as people slowly leave. Send me your new, updated, or reviews of networking events and organizations. The Notable & Where I'm going... Tell them you heard about it from Todd's blog! I'll be speaking (yes, yours truly) on “Effective Networking for Entrepreneurs” at the GroundUP Business Group 's Tuesday, March 9th 7-8:30pm, at Zephyr Coffee House, 2419 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91107 .

The Open Angel Forum , the new angel investment group run by Mahalo's Jason Calacanis , is expanding into Colorado with a new event, the group said Friday. The Open Angel Forum group grew out of an effort by Calacanis to challenge a number of angel groups where entrepreneurs have to "pay to pitch" in front of investors; Calacanis had started what he called a "jihad" against groups charging for presenting their opportunities. The Colorado chapter is being headed up by David Cohen of TechStars , a Boulder-based incubator and Internet seed investment effort by local Colorado angels and venture investors.

Jason Calacanis , founder of Mahalo , is a partner in the TechCrunch50 conference, where he helped rehearse most of the 50 startups who presented. In this video (which he did exclusively for Mixergy) he talks about how to present a new product. The key to presenting is showing , not telling .
Do you know how to excite people when you tell them about your business?
Here’s the paraphrased text of what he said:

The show kicks off with a great presentation (different every month) and then heads over to Docstoc ’s headquarters for even more, intense networking.
LA Hadoop Meetup – My good friend Mark Jeffrey’s company, Mahalo , typically hosts these events. My friend Mark Long recently asked me about networking in Los Angeles. Mark is a CTO, see, and his company, PortBlue , was recently acquired (congrats, Mark!).

Day one had five panels scheduled as well as time for each of the showoffs to take the stage and give a presentation. Speculation was that Mahalo had been acquired or secured additional funding, but it turns out that the news was more on a personal level. Twiistup 6 took place last week and this time around, under new management, the event went through a few changes. Instead of a one evening mixer that highlighted the showoffs and gave people a chance to mingle and get to know the companies, it was expanded to a two day conference with panels, and plenty of time for mingling.

By now everyone has seen the infamous Sequoia presentation, R.I.P. If you’ve already seen the presentation, there’s a good post worth checking out from Silicon Alley Insider that provides a few more details on what was discussed at the all-hands Sequoia meeting.
There’s also a good post from last week by Jason Calcanis of Mahalo, What to do if your Startup is About to Fail. Good Times . From what I can tell traveling around the US and overseas, it looks like these slides have circulated faster than the Paris Hilton video (sorry, no link on this last

It started last week when Mahalo founder Jason Calcanis fired a shot across the bow of angel groups, like Keiretsu and Maverick Angels, that charge entrepreneurs fees to present. Contrast presentation fees with the recent trend by angel groups to charge a "bozo filter" (credit NY Angels' David Rose ) when entrepreneurs apply. Most angel groups do not charge fees to present, including the Tech FROM TORONTO
Is Keiretsu Forum preparing to file suit against Jason Calcanis?
