Last evening I gave a presentation on Marketing and Publicity for Startups at the Founders Institute at their 2010 San Diego session. Enter Mahalo , the search engine formerly known as human-powered.
Sometime Tuesday Jason will reveal “Mahalo 2.0,” a complete overhaul of the site based heavily on aggregated content. It seems Mahalo’s biggest strength, the humans themselves, were also its biggest weakness. “The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a (bull)dog. The man will be there to feed the dog.

Santa Monica-based Mahalo, the high profile startup headed by Jason Calacanis, has launched a new questions and answers site it is calling Mahalo Answers. The new Q&A service is the mysterious "Project A" which Calacanis was drumming up beta testers for earlier this month. Mahalo is a human powered search engine which uses a team of editors to cull the web for information on the most popular search The new service is similar to offerings from Yahoo with its Yahoo Answers service, Los Angeles-based Sodahead , and Demand Media's Answerbag Q&A service. Neurotictrepenuer Johanthan Harris is leaving Tesla powered startup Mahalo . What we do know is that he turned in a resignation letter and Jason quickly tore it up in front of the entire staff.

Santa Monica-based Tsavo Media, the online media startup headed by former Userplane founder Michael Jones, said today that it has hired on Sean Percival as Director of Content at the firm. Percival was most recently at Docstoc, where he was Content Manager, and has also previously headed up social media and search engine marketing at Mahalo. Percival has previously served at Trading Places International and Nova Development. According to Tsavo, Percival will manage the build-out of Tsavo's vertical properties.

‘ This Week In Startups ‘ (TWiST) producer and Kevin Rose body double , Alex Miller is leaving Los Angeles to join Yext , an online yellow pages. The new startup is based in New York City and from what I’m told that is somewhere far far away from gorgeous Southern California. Well, it’s official: I’m excited to let you know about a couple big changes in my life: starting next week, I will Best of luck with that buddy!
