Los Angeles-based Fandango , which operates an online movie ticketing service, announced today that it has rolled out a mobile phone ticketing option. The firm, which is a unit of Comcast Interactive, said its mobile ticket program allows users to use their mobile phones to get into movies. The offering works through a paperless, scannable barcode shown on a mobile phone's display. The firm said the new offering will be available in eight markets, starting in New York, New Jersey, Houston, Dallas/Plano, San Diego, Bakersfield, Sonoma County, and Hawaii, at selected theaters run by Reading Cinemas.

San Diego-based Verimatrix has snagged a Motorola vet as its new Chief Technology Officer, the firm said today. The firm said it has named Petr Peterka, formerly a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in the CTO's office at Motorola's Home and Networks Mobility Team to the position. Peterka is active in the DECE, DLNA CPS, ATIS, SMPTE, Coral, DVB, ITU-T and other standards organizations, specifically working on digital rights management (DRM0 systems. Verimatrix is a developer of DRM software used in set top boxes and IPTV.

Search engine giant Google announced Tuesday that the firm is funding a number of University research projects, including a group of researchers at UC San Diego, a researcher at UC Santa Barbara, and a researcher in Los Angeles. San Diego-based Ortiva Wireless , a developer of products for managing mobile video, said today today that it has enhanced the firm's Video Optimization Gateway product to support H.264 QVGA. San Diego-based VMIX , which provides an online service for managing online video for publishers, said today that it is in a strategic partnership with Qik, a provider of mobile live streaming services.
