The firm, which is backed by Hummer Winblad and Palomar Ventures, said its ranking service found that the most effective ad during the Super Bowl was for Budweiser's "Fence" ad, followed by Doritos "Dog Collar" spot, Snickers "Game", Doritos "Kid's Rule", and finally Google's "Parisian Love" advertising spot. Los Angeles-based Ace Metrix , the online advertising rating and analytics firm run by Steve Goldman , has applied the firm's ad rating service to the Super Bowl XLIV ads. Ace Metrix operates an online service which ranks and rates television advertising spots by their entertainment

Los Angeles-based Palomar Ventures is in a new funding with Soros Fund Management, in a deal worth $128.4M According to ExteNet, Palomar, an existing investor in the firm, was part of a new round of equity financing led by SSP Offshore LLC, an affiliate of Soros Fund Management and SBA Communications Corporation, which also included Centennial Ventures, Columbia Capital, Sevin Rosen Funds, and CenterPoint Ventures. Palomar is represented on ExteNet's board by Kevin to Illinois wireless firm ExteNet Systems . ExteNet designs, builds and operates distributed wireless networks.

It reminds me of the advice Palomar Ventures' Randy Lunn offered once, "never take advantage of an entrepreneur". Am I the last person to watch ABC's Shark Tank ?
Thankfully I have better things to do on a Friday night, so through the miracle of TiVo and a rainy Martin Luther King Day, I waded through Episode 106 . The popular appeal is easy to see, especially in this episode which was food oriented.

CalPERS, the California pension fund which is a major limited partner in venture capital funds here, apparently sold its stake in Palomar Ventures III, L.P. partner at Palomar Ventures declined to comment, saying that the firm has a "hard and fast" policy of not commenting on matters related to LPs. disclosure; however, CalPERS did say that it committed $25 million in 2004 to Palomar Ventures III, L.P., sometime earlier this year. CalPERS has been selling funds on the secondary market as it seeks to pare down its holdings.

The firm, which is funded by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures, said that the software-as-a-service product is aimed at advertisers and agencies looking to understand and compare the performance of competitive ads across their own market and other industries, and to gain feedback on their ads. Hummer Winblad's Ann Winblad and Palomar's Jim Gauer sit on the firm's board. Los Angeles-based Ace Metrix is looking to apply analytics to the television advertising market, saying this morning that it has launched a service which helps advertisers measure persuasion and watchability of their advertising.

According to the list, just Jim Gauer of Palomar Ventures , made the cut. This week's release of a list of their "Top 100" venture capitalists by AlwaysOn -- based roughly on number and dollar amount of successful M&A and IPO deals between October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2009--seems to have skipped local Southern California venture capitalists, with only one Southern California VCs listed. AlwaysOn highlighted Gauer's involvement in firms AlterPoint, Network Physics, RealOps, and Cerebra in the rankings.
