Earlier this month, Azusa-based CFX Battery , a stealthy battery technology spinout from Caltech, announced it had raised a new round of funding worth $14.2M. This week, the firm announced that it was renaming itself Contour Energy (www.contourenergy.com)--and said it was ready to talk about what its battery technology is all about. What's the story behind the new name, and what can you tell us about your technology?

I’ve worked with 30+ early-stage companies in all sorts of capacities (and spoken to many, many more), so I thought it might be worthwhile trying to classify the various ways that I’ve engaged in different technology roles in startups. Newport Beach-based Acacia Research , which aggressively acquires and licenses patents, said today that it has acquired two patent portfolios, made up of 24 U.S. patents, 7 U.S. patent applications, and 18 foreign patents, from a "major" technology company. The firm said the patents cover storage networks and disk array systems. Santa Barbara-based InTouch Technologies , which develops robotic telepresence sysetms for the health care industry, revealed this morning that it has settled a legal dispute with HeadThere Inc. over the firm's patents. According to InTouch Technologies, HeadThere has agreed to cease its alleged infringing activities--including promotion and sale of its products in the US--and both companies InTouch has also granted HeadThere a limited license to its certain U.S. patents, for products to be sold outside the United States.

Pasadena-based X1 Technologies , a developer of enterprise and PC search software, has scored a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, the firm said today. X1 said the patent covers technology for the incremental searching used in its user interface. According to the firm, the patent, No. 7,496,559, is the third for the company.

San Diego-based Illumina said today that it has been served with a complaint alleging patent infringement, from Carlsbad-based Life Technologies . According to Illumina, it is being sued by Life Technologies, Applied Biosystems, a Russian research institute, and the holders of patents which Life Technologies said are being infringed upon by Illumina in its Genome Analyzer System. The patents in Illumina said it will "defend this suit vigorously" claiming that the claims are "unfounded". Patents 5,616,478; 5,958,698; and 6,001,568.

The firm said that the patent is the second issued for the firm, which has another 11 additional patent applications.
