The study, conducted by Jon Funk of OceanRoad Partners , includes data from socalTECH.com's proprietary venture database , Dow Jones/VentureSource, and Greg Martin of Redpoint Ventures .
Funk The study found that the greatest values for Southern California venture-backed firms were created by companies operating in Online Services (51%), followed by Communications and Networking (15%), Software (10%) and Semiconductors (9%). A new study of the financial outcomes for Southern California venture-backed companies in the IT sector finds that approximately $48 billion in value has been created by those companies over the period 1995-2009.

The Industrial/Energy sector ranked second, with $95.16M in investments, followed by Software, with $63M in investments, and Medical Devices and Equipment, with $60.3M terms of venture firm activity, the report found that DFJ Frontier was the most active in the quarter, with five deals; GRP Partners , Mission Ventures , and Redpoint Ventures all had four deals each in the quarter.

Venice, California-based Topspin , a developer of software focused on helping musicians market and distribute their work, launched an upgrade to its product Wednesday at the SXSW festival. The firm said that it has commercially released its software, which helps artists generate demand from fans via direct marketing, social networking and other online channels, widgets, as well as email campaigns. It's a different company that knows how to build software, and you have to have a certain stomach for it, be in it for the long haul, and need to know how to manage engineers, manage software production, release cycles, and all that sort of stuff. Santa Monica-based Topspin Media , the developer of music and band marketing software headed by former Yahoo Music GM Ian Rogers, said over the weekend that it has added Andrew Mains as its new VP Artist Relations and Services. Topspin is developing software tools to help musicians market and distribute their music. The firm has received venture funding Mains was Head of New Media at Interscope Records. The firm said that Mains will help artists find their way to the firm's platform.

Topspin has developed software which helps music artists to market and distribute their music, helping aspiring and established artists to publish, sell, and reach their fans using the Internet. Topspin is venture backed by Redpoint Ventures and The Foundry Group. Topspin Media , the high profile, Santa Monica-based music startup headed by former Yahoo Music GM Ian Rogers, has inked a deal with independent music promoter INgrooves.

Aliso Viejo-based Networks In Motion , a developer of location-based, wireless navigation software, has been acquired for $170M. Networks In Motion was venture backed by Redpoint Ventures, Mission Ventures, and Sutter Hill Ventures, and last announced a Series C funding of $10M in early 2006. According to TeleCommunications Systems, a developer of wireless text messaging and E9-1-1 technology, it is in a definitive merger agreement to acquire Networks In Motion in a combinatoin of cash, stock, and promissory notes. The deal is expected to close this month.
