Pasadena-based Guidance Software , a developer of forensics software for digital investigations of computers, said today that it has hired Leo J. Guidance develops software used by government, corporate, and law enforcement customers to examine computers for e-discovery and other investigations. Lake Forest-based Nexiant , a developer of materials management software tools, announced this morning that it has named Michael Aghajanian to its board. Nexiant's software-as-a-service is used to control, management, and optimize industrial supply chains. Thousand Oaks-based Servoy , a developer of software for developing software-as-a-service applications, said Monday that it has upgraded its namesake platform. According to the company, the upgraded software includes updates such as real-time clustering, drag-and-drop support, and ability to run applications either as software-as-a-service or through on-premise deployment.

SaaS > desktop software
It recently occurred to me that I use SaaS almost exclusively. A few years ago, I’d have to get IT approval to purchase a client/server project management system, someone would have to install/manage/support that system and install desktop software for each user. Now, almost everything SaaS is turnkey and can be used by anyone with a browser.
After almost 3 years at Momentum, I’m rounding the corner on my final week. I’m headed back to school full-time this fall, so for the last several days, I’ve focused on

Los Angeles-based CrownPeak , a developer of content management software, said Tuesday that the firm has rolled out a suite of new features for its CMS tools. The firm--whose tools are available as software-as-a-service--said that it has added a new, what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) authoring environment; better connection to desktop development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Eclipse, or Dreamweaver; and new analytics options. PracticeOne , a developer of electronic health records management software-as-a-service, which is jointly headquartered in Canoga Park and Richland, Washington, has been acquired by healthcare software developer AdvancedMD Software. PracticeOne develops electronic health record software used for managing medical documentation and medical records. AdvancedMD announced the deal today, but did not disclose financial details behind the buy. The firms said that the acquisition did not include PracticeOne's billing service, which was sold prior to the acquisition.
