San Diego-based Elecelyx Therapeutics , a stealth mode biotech firm, has raised $1.2M in a funding round, which includes Morgenthaler Ventures, according to a regulatory filing this week. San Diego-based b>EMN8 , a developer of order taking kiosks for the fast food industry, has raised $14.4M Bass Associates, and Fort Washington Capital. According to the filing, representatives from RMT Family Partners and Allegis Capital are now on its board. The firm no longer lists former investor in a funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the firm this week. The funding has not been announced by the company.

I had previously raised VC in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2005. In case VC’s haven’t figured this out yet, shit rolls downhill. My blog linked to Brad Feld’s blog because I was so grateful for his series on term sheets and he was one of the biggest reasons that as a VC I felt compelled to blog. Venture capital firm Sofinnova Ventures has hired on an Executive-in-Residence based in San Diego, the firm said Thursday. According to Sofinnova, Ekman will work to identify and build early stage companies, and will be based in San Diego. Sofinnova is an investor in a number of San Diego firms, including Cebix, Intellikine, Ocera Therapeutics, Phenomix, and Trius Therapeutic Sofinnova, which invests in early stage life sciences and IT firms, said it has appointed Lars Ekman, M.D., Ph.D.

SOMARK Innovations , a firm which is developing chipless, RFID tattoo technology used for animal identification, is setting up shop in San Diego, the firm disclosed earlier this month. The company--which also landed a venture capital round from Finistere Ventures and T2 Venture Capital--said the new location will be based at the Center for Emerging Technologies. SOMARK is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) released their quarterly MoneyTree data over the weekend, totaling up $751M in Southern California deals. San Diego slipped somewhat in the amount of capital invested during the quarter, to $178.4M. Interestingly enough, San Diego — which led Q2 investments — slipped significantly Taking a closer look at the numbers, LA led the region with $385.65M in deals, but Orange County also had a strong showing with $186M in deals. A report on venture capital fundraising released this morning reveals that Domain Associates , which has its west coast offices located in San Diego, was the biggest venture capital fundraise in Q2, with a $371.1M However, overall venture capital fundraising in the industry dropped to only $1.7 early stage fund, Domain Partners VIII. billion in the second quarter--a 13 year low--as only 25 funds were able to find capital through their fundraising efforts.
